I agree. I currently have an iPhone 4 and it works fine. It's slow, sure, but it works and does what it needs to do. It texts, loads up webpages and even takes calls with no problem. I'm still on iOS 7 so it's not the newest but it works just fine.
Nobody NEEDS the newest phone. With the way phones are coming out, the newest version has nothing more than minor upgrades (better camera, etc) and a crap ton of gimmicks (new emojis, etc).
That's just not something you should ever joke about. Whether you mean it or not, you never know who might actually take those words seriously.

I'd have to recommend a oneplus since you can activate it at any service provider and they aren't expensive. If you're working, you can probably purchase it yourself and then ask your parents to have it added to the family plan. Also have to reccomend the 4/4s like another person said earlier. They are really sturdy, I just hate how boring and bland IOS is. I can change my wallpaper and that's really it for customization unless you decide to jailbreak. Which is a bit of a pain at times, but not to complicated. It used to be sort've hard to find the right place for JBing your phone, but it's probably a lot easier now since it's been done for so many years. Probably can get some info on it through reddit.
About the bullying thing, though someone may make a joke about your phone if you have like an old pantech or something, I'm sure you won't get bullied for it. Kids in college are to busy to judge you. I can walk around with my pink 3ds and play pokemon and no one will look at me funny. In high school, you may experience someone saying something to you once or twice, but you will be fine. I'm not saying bullying doesn't happen, but people usually find something else to to hurt you with than your phone. If you keep on a smile and show a bit of confidence, I'm sure you will be fine.
Sorry for the wall of words, but I wanted to say something else. I feel that the OP came off wrong, but I don't think he/she really deserves some of the responses she/he is getting.
