Pet Discussion ~ Furry Critters & Such

I haven't discussed much not game related in this forum, other than in my profile... I have pets. I had 6 cats. Now I have 5. As I said in my profile, I play the game to distract from my life, as it has become quite difficult. Anyway, my husband and cats are everything to me, and I lost one of my cats a couple of days ago. It was quite traumatic, as it started with a urinary blockage and by the time he was sent home, we thought he was going to be fine based on what the vet said... and we paid A LOT MORE at this vet, but figured they were more thorough and that we would do whatever we needed to to be able to keep our kitty alive til we could afford a surgery to prevent any future blockages... we now know that the blockage was pretty bad... so bad that kidney failure probably started before the blockage was caught. The vet took all our money and our cat died. We had a happy, healthy 6 year old kitty one day and he got a blockage and never got better even after they fixed it, but we thought he was going to be okay... he was dead within 1 week. The night of his death was the second time he went to the vet this week, and they made it sound like his chances were slim even if we could afford everything. We prepared for euthanasia, and then they convinced us to pay all we had for some small shot at him being okay. We are glad we did all we could and now know even if we had more money, it wouldn't have saved him, but I don't know why they didn't know how bad off he was or didn't know about the kidney failure sooner. It feels like they just wanted all our money, because they made us believe he had a shot after a blood test, and then later the same night, they resuscitated him after an inexplicable seizure, and then later called again to say he needed to be put down because of septic abdomen. He died before they even did any euthanasia. I feel sick and lost without this kitty in my life. He was very special and was once my sister's cat. I took him from CA to New England in 2009. He was so special. My sister is finally visiting at the end of this year and would have been seeing this kitty for the first time since he moved over here... now she never will. :'(

Thanks for listening to my story. My other cats are a approx. 14 year old orange and white cat, an 11 year old Maine Coon, a 5 year old calico cat and two 1.5 year old Japanese Bobtails.

I agree they're the best when it comes to cuteness; definitely not when it comes to potty training

I had a gerbil that lived for 3 years. His name was Jack the Gerbil and he was awesome! He would climb on my shoulder and would bite everyone but me :) he was a little badass.

He's been in gerbil heaven for around 5 years now!

Elsh, heart goes out to you. :( My Husky/Chow mix had a similar scenario- except the Vet ran a blood test w/out my permission & then informed me of her liver problems. He then threw in options to combat these issues & I was like... 'I'll get back to you.' She was 8 then & lived for another 5 years. We euthanized her last Feb. due to severe leg problems.

It's hard to relive past the choices we make but questions like 'How often has this Vet performed this procedure', 'What are the chances of a full recovery', 'Can you give me referrals of pet owners who've had this procedure done' must be ASKED. If this Vet gave you the impression that your pet would recovery & he/she did not- that's an easy legal case. It's a crude situation but many owners today are led on & due to their grief, simply forego what might have been poor medical practice.

Again, this is a horrid subject so please bear w/ me... ALWAYS have your local State Animal adoption centre info ready. They have the best rates for euthanizing & IMO, they've given me an honest outlook for my other pets Vs. Vets in private practice. If some serious procedure is required, I can at least seek a specialist.

If possible Elsh, gift your sister a picture of your kitty- you did all you could then & that's all that matters! (=

The former was taken awhile ago, the latter I took just now...the pictures that is.

I own two siberian huskies, a 4 year old named Tasha and a 7 year old named Zelda, and one 6 month old cat, Flower. Flower is the cutest thing, I'd upload a picture but they're all on my camera and not on my computer yet, oh well.
