I need to rant because this is something that has been bothering me a lot. I just need to say this anyone who has a habit of going AFK need to understand that if you go to someone's island and you be afk for a while it causes problems. Whats worse someone could be on their nookphone and they don't put it away which prevents other people who were on the island not to leave. This will force the host to the end the session which doesn't save what other people were doing on the island. My advice, if you're going to go AFK just tell the host and tell them that you are leaving. It should not be this hard to understand. Have any of you guys had people who do this if so what would you do?

I’ve had to go AFK once or twice. I try my best not to do this, but sometimes it’s necessary. If so, I ALWAYS tell the owner I have to go afk and get back as soon as possible. I’d NEVER leave myself on nookphone, either.

Well know this. Never go AFK when you're on your nookphone, have your inventory open, or even talking to villagers. I seen people do that and it really is annoying when they do that because you have people who want to leave the island and then some who want to come to the island.

I understand if you just need to go AFK just for a quick moment, but if you know you're going to be a while, it would be best to leave the island unless the host agrees you can stay (as if host knows they'll still be playing within given timeframe).

Also, it would simple online etiquette that if you do have to go AFK, don't open anything. It's the least thing they could do to allow gameplay to continue smoothly.

I‘ve hosted while afk a few times because I don’t always have time/patience to sit and stare at my switch while people are coming and going.

Oh, I don’t do ANYTHING that would block flow of traffic. I hate getting the airplane mode block so I do my best to avoid making others wait like that.

Yeah I would think people by now would understand this but from my experience they still do it. Even my friend told me he no longer opens up his gates to his island because had issues where people were just shopping for too long and they were afk. Some of his friends tried to leave but that one person was shopping for too long and then they just "quietly left" I assume their Internet must've cut out and then everyone left after that.

I never ever go afk while visiting someone's island. But it's happened a lot that people go afk with a menu/dialogue open while I'm visiting other people's islands and I'm trapped there for so long.. 😭 I hate when that happens. I always thought it was people trolling on purpose. Never did I think it was people just going afk to do something else quickly. It always felt on purpose.. maybe I'm wrong. It's just such a weird thing to believe isn't done maliciously because I thought it was common sense not to stay on a menu/dialogue while in another person's town. I think it was only once that I got trapped on an island and the host suddenly was in a menu and I couldn't leave for 15 minutes. Since they were so nice and kind the entire interaction I was there, I assumed they had put their switch down and accidentally pressed the chat button and opened a menu and didn't realize. But when it is a fellow visitor doing it, I always assumed they were just doing it to be mean and force everyone to be kicked out.

Aw man I know how you feel. One time I went to an island and my goodness the lobby was like full of players. I was trying to explore but every step I took I keep getting "Looks like somebody's leaving" and then when I take the step I see "Looks like someone's on their way here" I mean the idea this is a thing in the game is so bad just having to wait through all these loading screens. This is why I stopped going people's islands because when you have this many people there is going to be that one person who goes AFK while shopping, looking at their phone or talking to villagers/npcs ,which can ruin the experience.

I don't think I've ever had someone be afk on my island when I hosted. I'm also notifying guests constantly when someone is coming or leaving, so no one has a window open to interfere.

Though when I've visited other islands, the host was afk and one person went afk talking to Orville. I really thought I was trapped, lol.

Oh man that must've been a bad experience. I really don't get why people think its okay to do this.

I've never had anyone do that, but I have done it once and not for long. The reason I did was because my cat was vomiting and I wanted to make sure he was alright. However, I did let the trader know I would be away.

I would feel so bad if I ever went to someone’s island and then go afk. It just feels kinda rude, but I do understand things can happen that are out of their control so as long as they let the host know (or leave if they will think they will be gone for extended period of time) it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Luckily I have never had this happen to me when having visitors over and I don’t see myself ever going to someone’s island if I know I’m gonna have other things to do.

You'd think it's common courtesy to tell a person you're going to be away from the game for a bit. Definitely put your phone away, too.

If the person warns me ahead of time, I have no problem with it, especially if they are just sitting there instead of being in their phone or inventory, I've had a lot of people do this when I've been going to pick something up at their island

as far as the visiting person going afk, I would definitely be annoyed if someone was visiting me then suddenly went afk and I would never visit someone then go afk unless it was an emergency
you should go to their island, do your business, then leave lol

I was having a hard time understanding this thread, and wondered if I had ever gone afk and angered anyone. I had to look up the meaning. Thankfully, I'm good. Lol.

I actually haven't had anyone do this while on my island and wouldn't feel comfortable going AFK on someone elses. If I need to go AFK I'll just leave their island and come back another time since it seems kind of rude. I only go AFK on my catalog island because it takes people a while to catalog everything.

my anxiety could never. i’ve never had this happen to me but i can understand why this may occur. it can definitely be a bit inconvenient and awkward but i try my best to remain understanding as you never know what’s going on in the person’s surroundings; that being said, if possible, a quick heads-up would definitely be appreciated along with not having their nookphone or pockets equipped so that it doesn’t interfere with anyone coming or going :’^)
