The only games I have for my 3DS are Animal Crossing : New Leaf and Pokemon X. I'd like to have other games to play, but I'm not sure which ones I would like. Could I get any recommendations? I'm taking a break from World of Warcraft and want to do more gaming away from my computer. But I like games like Catherine, Battle Block Theatre, Killing Floor, Borderlands, Torchlight, The Sims, Awesomenauts, et cetera (of course none of these are hand held games though).

Do you like RPG's?
Maybe Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda games?
I can suggest some stuff then...I'd also try and look at the e-shop and see if anything catches your eye.

I suggest Fire Emblem Awakening and Bravely Default, their demos should still be up on e-shop if you wanna check them out before buying. The latest Zelda, A Link between worlds was apparently pretty good too from what I heard, but can't say for myself since I havent played it yet.

Hmm this could be tough.

I'll just recommend games I like.

If you want hardcore RPG's here are some of my picks.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is an excellent jrpg with a really fun turn based combat system. If you like Pokemon you might like this plus the story is well much darker than anything Pokemon has but the comparison lies with the fusion system. Instead of leveling up demons you fuse them to create new demons with new abilities and traits. Its really fun and a LONG game. It also has an INCREDIBLE soundtrack. Full voice acting too.

Another great jRPG on the 3DS is Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked. If you ever played Final Fantasy Tactics well think of that kind of grid based tactical combat but instead of having your units fight 1 on 1 its usually 3 on 3. It has full voice acting too and a ton of choice and consequences. Its a very challenging game too. Again like with SMTIV it also has demon fusion which is common in every Atlus game that shares the title Shin Megami Tensei. Don't worry the universe/settings are independent of each other and aren't connected.

Now this is a niche series but I LOVE Etrian Odyssey. They are basically old school first person RPG's but well made by Atlus. This game has a demo on the eshop and better yet everything you do in the demo is transferred into the main game and not only that its on sale at this moment for $15! There are two Etrian Odyssey games on the 3DS. Etrian Odyssey IV and Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennium Girl which is a remake of the first game. Both are excellent games and the only difference with the Untold is there a story mode. Basically the games in this franchise is all about the gameplay and are light on story except the remake.

There are many more games I suggest but these are some of my favorite non-first party games on the 3DS.

Shin Megami Tensei IV, Fire Emblem, and Etrian Odyssey are great RPGs. You mentioned Catherine which I freakin loved, this is totally off but Pushmo satisfied my block pulling and pushing needs in that game after the pushing and pulling in Catherine.
If you want more like Sims + Animal Crossing, you can try out Tomodatch Life, or if you like Disney then Disney Magical World is highly praised and has DLC and stuff. Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is another great Sim game. I also like to recommend Shinobi even though it's kind of funky, the 3DS one is actually not bad for a time waster that can have some mature input. I got a physical copy for $5 used, it was a launch game I think.

Yup

Right now at Best Buy if you get Zelda you can get another game for free. I would suggest Zelda AND Bravely Default. Excellent games and also still going at the full MSRP.

Resident Evil Revelations.

Definitely this. Not sure what 3DS you have or if they're even sold still, but a circle pad pro simply makes this game amazing.

Backing Zelda and Shin Megami Tensei. There's also Soul Hackers and Devil Survivor Overclocked.

It's old school, but try The Legend of Zelda on the NES. Or you could emulate it, if you really want to. The 3DS is the only rerelease of the game in its exact original condition so far.

Zero's Escape: Virtue's Last Reward.

...Yes, Im going to go everywhere and suggest this game and its first game, 999...

Just a quick heads up that many of these games are already sold out nationwide, so you might not get your choices here.

Otherwise, I recommend Kirby Triple Deluxe, Donkey Country Returns (if you didn't already play it on the Wii), Gunman Clive, Zelda Ocrinia of Time, Zelda A Link Between Worlds and Luigi's Mansion: Dark of the Moon.
