Do you keep the initial phrases of your villagers, or do you prefer give them custom phrases? Also, do you try to keep their houses intact, or you change their furniture? How do you keep their houses intact?
If I am certain I'm not going to keep them I try to keep them as original as I can. But if I am wanting to keep them I just do whatever, if I have the imagination to come up with a phrase for them I do that, otherwise I just tell them they are still totally cool saying whatever it is they are saying for the moment.
For most of them I change their catchphrases but try to keep their houses pretty original. I do this by filling Retail with flowers so that they can't sell anything and not carrying furniture so that they don't ask to buy it.
There are a couple of exceptions though. I really hate Rolf's house so I'm constantly sending him new furniture to make it look better.
I don't worry about originality at all. Sometimes I try to fix their houses and make them decent again if they fill it with bugs and fish and ugly furniture, but I don't try to make it back to the original because that's a pain.
I like customizing things up. It becomes too much of an effort to keep villagers uncustomized if they're intended to be permanent residents. I tried to keep Kid Cat's shirt the same to match his fur colour but then I just gave up after he changed his shirt twice. It was actually rather cute to see him wearing Lolly's pink parka .
I usually change the catchphrase. I also change the houses up a bit. But I try to give them furniture I like. I don't really like catching fish and bugs for them though but I do sometimes anyways.
Whether I change their catchphrases depends. Sometimes they're just perfect but sometimes I can think of something better.
I love to decorate my villagers' houses. I'll give them furniture (even refurbished furniture) and stuff like that.
There are some easy ways to keep their houses intact (or if you're like me, to stop them from ruining things completely). When they ask you for items, say yes but don't do it or do it if it would look nice in their houses. In my experience, it doesn't affect your friendship with them. When you're asked to deliver an item to another villager, either save the game, open it to see what it is, and then reload the game, or save, deliver it, and if you don't like the results just quit without saving. Filling up your Re-Tail with overpriced fruit stops villagers from buying or selling things on there.
Also if you don't want your villagers selling their furniture at Re-tail, you can put ores and superb coffee beans for sale for 7,999 bells (9,999 bells for gold and silver ores). That's the highest you can go without them thinking it's overpriced, so they'll always buy them, and they won't put them in their houses.
I try to keep most of their catch phrases the same just because they fit well ^^ Though I did change tangy's to "Juicy" because she is basically a tangerine cat. I tried to keep the houses original, but that didnt go well and I have quite a few villagers that moved in with unoriginal houses so my goal is to keep them looking nice!
i have no imagination so i kept all their catchphrases original except deirdre's which annoyed me too much. their houses don't have to be original however i try and keep them that way for as long as possible, if they're not original then at least all the furniture has to match and no random bugs/fish
I change my permanent villagers, I try to keep other villagers intact especially higher tiered ones, but it's difficult because I like to interact with all of my villagers, i've had a few villagers who were never meant to be permanent but grew on me through interaction and now I can't part with them.
