I have an unusual amount of free time on my hands thanks to a surgery, and I am trying to find ways to entertain myself, as well as learn new things.
Do any of you know origami, and if so can you give me any advice on where to begin? I see origami kits online, but I just want to make sure I go in the right direction from folks who actually know the art!
I haven’t done any origami in a while but I was really into it when I was kid. I’d check out some YouTube video tutorials since they show you how the folds work. :0 There are also some good YouTubers out there, like Jeremy Shafer (he’s pretty much the first person that came to mind lol). Practice is key!
I've purchased origami kits (which have come with a book plus origami paper) before. Some books are better than others, but I like to use online resources as well. The website I've used the most is Origami.me, which I like because I find it very straightforward, though someone else might know better resources! I also don't mind using YouTube if it has a design I like!
For choosing paper, it depends what you like! Paper can come colored on one side (and white on the back). Some paper has patterns on one or both sides. I like to get origami paper that is already square cut, with either a different solid color on each side, or a pattern on one side and a solid color on the other! I find these the most versatile (where having the paper white on one side can be less appealing with some folds). Paper can also come matte or glossy, though I don't have a preference on that!
Great ideas! Thank you! I had no idea where to start, so this helps, especially with the different types of paper! I think I will look for a decent kit with instructions and start there, and move up if it seems like something I will continue doing!
Love doing origami~
haven't done it in a while though. I use youtube videos of people folding it, o I have a more better look at how to do specific origami; and you can slow it down incase the do the actions too quickly.
I got small packet of square paper, quite thin, for origami paper.
Hope you enjoy! It's a lot of fun!
When you get to more complex or confusing origami, and if you get stuck, the best bet is to leave it for a bit, and come back; which has helped me before.
I haven't done oragami since I was fairly young. The only two things I used were youtube + an oragami sheet book from barnes & noble. From what I remember a perfect square is the most universal size for oragami projects. Its actually a very cheap hobby. Just start with a small oragami sheet book and make some animals. Its super fun when you start getting pretty paper and adding your own designs
I've only ever made paper cranes and lucky stars, I would recommend starting there! Youtube is the best place to learn.
And once you start buying origami paper, watch out, you're probably gonna end up with a big collection of origami paper. Its an addictive thing to buy.. at least for me anyway
I think you are right, and this is one of the reasons it popped in my head because a guy at work would make origami designs with post-it notes at work and they are squares. They are also small, so he can only make simple ones, I think, but I still thought they were cool and wanted to learn how to do them myself!
I am expecting a basic kit to arrive any minute now with 38 beginner designs and 162 sheets of paper, all different colors and designs!
I have a feeling it will be addictive for me too, like @Millysaurusrexjr mentioned!
