So after much stress of trying to work with an obtrusive river mouth and a gigantic space in front of my plaza that I hated so much, I've decided to say sod it and start my island again. I'm now trying to find the perfect map. I'm hoping to find a map where the plaza and airport are much closer, ideally aligned as my previous was not and with possibly two south river mouths. My idea is simple, but I'm not sure how to go about it or if it is even a clever idea, I'd hate to waste my time on it and find it's just awful.

I do want a river on my island for the obvious sake of catching fish and bugs that may spawn in/on them, but I also don't want it to be in the way of where I plan to build things.

One idea is this:

Obviously I could build from this and extend it upwards as I see fit, making it branch out in other places once all of my buildings have been arranged..

Or maybe something like this, with the similar principal?

I'm intending on having my villagers together in a small community, with the houses mostly going together horizontally rather than vertically.

Just wondering what you guys think on this. Any suggestions would be very much welcomed.

I like the second a bit better than the first, I definitely understand not wanting a river taking up the whole thing, but the first one looks a bit squished imo. I have a bridge behind my resident services and I think it looks super nice, so that's part of why I like the second. I'll post a pic of my river/ map if you want to see it. The first could also be fine if you plan on branching upward, and outward as you go (but also I'm worried if there's any room for a bridge?)
You probably know this already, but some fish only spawn on cliff rivers iirc, so that could be an issue here.

My only suggestion about your first idea is that you might not have space to make the entrance you want. Quite a few players regret having their resident services so close to the airport, but honestly I think it can work out well.

I like the second idea better. My only other suggestion if you were to follow the second idea would be to try and round it out, so the river curves in a natural way. That way it looks like an arch! :)

This opens up the possibilities of adding cute bridges on either the left and right side that would connect to the rest of the island.

That's what I thought about the first one, going through everything just to find there's no space for the bridge would be pretty bad. I'd love to see your map though, if you're still willing to share. I spent a long time decorating my last island and nothing worked, it was awful.

I'd seen a video where someone said that they regretted that. I think the fact that my previous island had such a large space (and also the fact I'm bad at decorating) I was never sure what to do with it.

That's actually a good idea. I have liked the idea of a river made nicely with multiple bridges, but I've not been able to pull it off yet.
Here's a list of maps that you can look at and hopefully find.
Thanks for this, I got a good idea of what to look out for. I've not ended up with double south river mouths like I wanted, but the map does look pretty promising!

I hadn't paid any attention to the river mouths when I started. I have two southern river mouths. I think they're probably the easiest to manage since they're both going south.
