Opinion on K-POP? (Korean pop music)

I consider the majority of people actively involved in the fandoms as obsessives rather than simply fans. They're scary. D:

Of the newer/younger groups, I suppose I should mention that I've an eye on NU'EST. You'd think I'd have thought to mention it already given that I've a clip from their Sleep Talking MV in my signature. Their first two releases implied they were going to take a fresh stance on the boy band concept, but they seem to be sliding backwards. :(

oh yeah, a lot of EXO's sasaeng (super obsessive) fans in most parts of asia are really scary. though fans ive met through tumblr dont seem to be that possessive, so im ok with them ^^

NU'EST had some pretty good songs i agree, but yeah i think most bands do slide backards :(

I don't hate it, but I don't like it, either.

I guess it's tolerable when people around me listen to it, or if it comes on the radio and I'm not paying attention, but I wouldn't look for it.

Oh a K-Pop thread!

I actually mainly listen to K-Pop nowadays. Well... I should say... I mainly listen to DBSK (a) It's the first K-Pop group I discovered and I can't give up. I'm a Cassiopeia (their fan club name), even if the separation broke my heart. I still keep the faith~ ;w;

My favs are also Big Bang and T-ara.
I also like many other groups, but I don't like that much new bands.

Loved bigbangs alive album! ^^

I like a lot of kpop, but I don't like all of it just because it is.

My big issue is that it's not actually one genre. Sure some groups make the same kind of music, but that's true in any country. Kpop is being used as a term for all the music in south korea regardless of its actually genre, which is okay as long as people understand it. I think a lot of groups have very talented people, across various positions.

(I won't rant about my favorites since I don' know if anyone is looking at this thread anymore anyway)

But the point is that its a whole country, with a bit of a different style across it's evolving genres, and I actually love a lot of it and love being able to see some of my favorite artists be dorks and have some fun once in awhile while still knowing that they are and have been working really hard to get where they are...

Plus the sheer amount of music coming out is fantastic. If you like a variety of it you could be getting new songs all the time.

Also although I assume every one's basically off this thread, although nu'est's songs seem to be getting less original I guess, the variety in the sleep talking album was still nice. They weren't all the same style as eachother.

Oh geez I was a really big fan of it in 8th grade and half of 9th? Obviously my obsession with it died out fairly quickly. I honestly think it was because of tumblr and how many EXO blogs I followed. I got tired of seeing their faces. I'm also pretty sure because of PSY I got tired of hearing about it because my classmates would constantly talk about it and kept calling it "your music" to my face when I didn't even like that song. Oh classmates, ruining everything for me.

I still listen to k-pop but not as often anymore. SHINee is my favorite and always will be. I can't seem to get tired of Teen Top or Nu'est songs either haha.

I'm Korean, lived in Korea for my whole life... I don't really like it... I never got into it, at least the stuff they have now a days (but I do sing an embarrassing amount of 2NE1 at karaoke). It's so formulaic (but I guess all pop is). The only Kpop I listened to ever was when G.O.D (LOVED THEM), H.O.T, Shinhwa, S#arp (was so gooood), Fly to the Sky, and those dudes were around... I think I was 9. But they were really good back in the day... I prefer the KHiphop like Leesang and Drunken Tiger. Yoon Mi Rae + Tiger JK <3... all korean dudes should look like him man... not like the dudes in kpop now lol

this is amazing lol... classic

I was SUPER into Korean culture about five-six years ago (back when the Korean wave started). Even wrote several analytical papers on the subject in college regarding it. But then, suddenly, I just stopped. In fact, there was a period of time where I just COULD NOT stand the music anymore.

I think it was because after being so immersed in it, the wonder rubbed off and I realized everything I heard was almost a carbon copy of each other. The same model-esque dance troupe of girls, the same androgynous pretty boys. People literally dedicate almost DECADES of their lives to go to these boot-camps where they train from a very early age to be molded into these pop-group ready mannequins. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I'm just far too impartial to really care about diving in again to the cesspool of mediocrity.

That being said, the songs are catchy and easily stuck in your head. Just what a pop song is probably supposed to be. Profitable. And I respect the artists who work so hard to make a brand for themselves. Some of the hardest working (and severely UNDERPAID) people.

I'm not a big fan. I used to be into it back in high school for a bit, but I lost interest relatively quickly. I just don't listen to a lot of music in general though. I usually only listen to what I'm exposed to elsewhere.

K-Pop is my all around favorite. I completely dislike US Pop (Which is where I'm from) and K-Pop just has something awesome about it that I can't ever stop listening to.

Then again I also have a thing for Koreans. *___*

aa i like some of it !
i like how k pop isn't just about the music + how hot the people are and the celeb gossip
it's about the whole thing : the singing, rapping, dancing, live performance, interviews, personalities .. etc.
it seems a lot more immersive than western pop, and i prefer how the mainstream stuff isn't just all sexual [some of it is, of course, but not as much as western lyrics ehh] like it is in the us/uk

Kpop isn't really my type of music... but I've kinda started getting into it. But there's this one song that I saw a few seconds of that's been stuck in my head and I've been dying to know what it is;~; I don't speak Koren and I tried to googling what I remember but nope xD

I just hope it isn't actually Jpop....
