One villager,two towns???

I have been doing some trading with another tbt member recently. I just got a new villager(Sprinkle) and shes from the other persons town. When I mentioned this to the other person they told me they got one of my villagers(Cube) but he's still in my town! Is this is a glitch? I haven't done any villager swapping so I don't know if this is common or not.

edit:the other person said hes from my town so he must've told her that
