I heard and thought if you laid patterns down for paths it protects the grass underneath from deteriorating. but i was reading some wiki page and it said it does nothing to help with protecting the grass. So is it true?

it doesn't do anything

it just hides the deterioration is all

Not everything on Wiki is true. Somebody probably just edited it. Patterns do not protect the grass however.
