Obsession with "Original" villagers

Eh. I don't mind them being unoriginal. I am curious about one thing though. If a villager is wearing a custom design you made from Able Sisters and they move, would they still have the custom design on when they appear at another person's town? It would be cool if they kept them in my opinion.

I don't know for sure but I think yes. That's probably why there's the option to report a villager to Isabelle for inappropriate clothing, which forces them to change. In case someone got a random wifi/streetpass move in that was wearing an offensive pattern.

Personally I'd rather adopt a villager if they're mostly original (being 100% original is even better) than a villager with a ton of bugs in their house. I like to keep all my villager's houses, catchphrases and shirts either intact or matching their character, otherwise I get really bothered by them. If I adopt a villager with something "off" inside their house I'll do my best to replace it with the original furniture or with something that matches the rest of their house, depending on the case. I also admire people who remodel their villager's houses with customized furniture sets matching their style, so I might try doing that someday!

I block re-tail from being used with 999.999 priced flowers and change the designs at able sisters to umbrellas so they don't change without my consent. I'm very nitpicky about my town as you can see, but then again, I did spend months resetting for my town map...

I don't know... But when I was younger I was definitely obsessed with my original villagers. I still remember my original 6 from the GCN version and I'm always happy to get the ones that are still around past the GCN version in my villages.

I have to agree with what you say. I never got it either. They are bound to change something at some point

cause i dont want a house full of bugs and fishes
it's a pain in the butt trying to refurnish it

I don't mind about villager originality. It's not going to make a difference to me when what it comes down to is I just want the villager themself. Of course, as Sholee pointed out, I wouldn't want their homes full of bugs and fish either though...but it's not going to mean I'll turn down a villager offer either.

The real joy to me is getting the villagers themselves and not an original house, shirt, or catchphrase they may come with. That's just me though, I can see why some people would want to at least try and keep things original. When a villager asks me to change their catchphrase I tell them no because I prefer original catchphrases over something lame I'd have to try and come up with, and if someone is wearing a shirt that just looks hideous on them I'll try my best to get them to change it. I don't pay much attention to what goes in and out of their houses.

I think it's pretty odd to only buy original villagers, even though I do keep mine pretty original. It's just so easy to get them back to mostly original status. I spent 9 months fulfilling my villagers every whim, and then one day I looked up and realized their homes looked awful and they were all wearing a stupid shirt with a yellow duck. I still loved them, but I realized something needed to change:) Now part of my game plan each day is to figure out a way to wedge a piece of original furniture back into someone's home. It's relative easy to get them back to the basic bones of their house, but tweaking it all the way - that's a challenge!

Yes, I got stitches with a custom design.

I totally get why. I got Maple and while she was in her original shirt, her whole house was FILLED with fish. :s It was really annoying to try to get her to change it and at least have a bed in there. I prefer that they have most of the original stuff because a lot of the houses are quite cute to start with.

I can understand the appeal. It's like starting with something fresh out of the box. Never been touched or changed. But I don't see why it'd be a deal-breaker if the villager your buying/bidding for isn't totally or mostly original (unless you really only want to get the furniture in their house for yourself). It's still the cute villager and their cutie self. If you're gung-ho about having a pristine character, it's not hard to give them their original furniture or make them change their shirt (although they'll change it themselves anyway so what's the point).

Unoriginal villagers are like well-loved hand-me-downs. Cute.

I 100% agree with this. Yeah its nice to get something brand new, but there is nothing wrong with something that has been previously loved :) Like others Id be annoyed if all there was in their house was fossils or fish :x

I used to care, but at this point, I don't really think I do? It's not hard to fix their shirts or houses if you want them original (unless they've particularly rare furniture), and catchphrases tend to end up mixed up whether you like it or not anyways.

Honestly, I don't why, but imagining all your villagers walking around in a yellow duck shirt made me laugh so hard in class xD

I recently learned (in a thread here, of course) that you can answer yes and when the phrase pops up to change just accept that phrase again The phrase stays the same, but the villager is thrilled that you have given them a new one. Everyone is happy!

Oh, I hadn't thought of that! I'll start doing it instead, thanks for the heads up c:

I personally don't care about the originality of a villager. I just want them and don't care about their catchphrase/interior/clothes, ect. In fact, I actually don't mind if they don't have original furniture because then I can rearrange it by giving them new furniture to match their theme/house. For example, I didn't like Paula's original set of furniture, so I gave her a bunch of refurbished alpine furniture and it looks really great in her house. :)

I love redoing my villagers homes too :) Sometimes they look much better afterwards! At least I think so, and that's all that matters, since I'm the one who usually sees it. c:

I guess I can see why some people would care about having an "original" villager because of the furniture, but I personally don't care about that. Most of my villager's houses are filled with non-matching furniture, bugs and fish. And the catchphrase and clothing isn't too hard to change.

But it would be pretty sad to never let them change anything in their houses. I don't know how other people feel, but I feel awful if I turn down their requests for bugs/fish and sending gifts to other villagers.

Yeah, I agree with that. On one hand I like the challenges they present to me like catching a certain fish or bug, but on the other hand, I don't want all of their houses to turn into aquariums/bug emporiums. Kind of wish they didn't present the things you catch for them in their houses--sometimes it's even a little strange. Like, catching a frog for a frog villager (???).
