Nookling Store Upgrade Question

Does it have to be in-store items that I have to spend money on to get the store upgrades or could I purchase items from my own personal catalog like in previous games to get the upgrades?

My store is upgrading and I only bought stuff from my catalog.

I have tried it on my catalog it did not work (it was after 25 days as well and I am still waiting for emporium)

I did it with my T&T mart, bought about 36K worth of stuff from my catalog and then I'm told they're expanding again. And no, I haven't bought anything besides fortune cookies
