Hello! I didn't see a thread with this information so my apologies if I missed it when I searched. Nintendo is now currently offering Free Online Trial for accounts that didn't have online membership. You can find more information here at
Nintendo Switch Free Online Redeem Link. Be sure to click don't renew at the end of the trial so Nintendo doesn't try to charge you.

For those people new to ACNH the online trial will give you access to the Custom Designs Portal, Dream Islands and Trading via Online Dodo Codes.

As far as I'm aware, they've offered a free trial for online for at least the past year, just by going through the eShop on your switch. It's just there with the other membership options.
