I think the 2ds will definitely be discontinued. I don't expect another new handheld until 2016-2017 personally.

I think you mean not backwards compatible. Because chances are it'll be locked again for sales and online reasons.
I doubt they'll drop backwards compatibility now, they're the last ones and people seem to still enjoy that.
