New to this visiting thing

There are no tricks really; just find someone who's willing to visit you, or have you visit them, add their FC, open the relevant gates, and play 
! Keep an eye out for Wi-Fi Ratings - they'll tell you who's trustworthy if you're visiting/being visited for trades, etc. That being said, in general, everyone on TBT pretty much awesome when it comes to this!
As for things you can only get from visiting each other's towns... There's Katie. If she shows up in your town, she'll request to be taken to someone else's town, and if you help her out, you'll get a present in the mail the next day. The Weeding Day Set is split into 2 subsets: one can be obtained in your own town, and the other can only be obtained by visiting someone else's town and doing weeding there. On this topic, visiting other people's towns (typically Cycling Towns) are a good (and in my opinion, only feasible) way to earn both the Weeding Day Set, as well as to rack up enough weeds to get the Weed Badges from Phineas. Oh, and collecting 100 visits to your town is the only way to unlock the Train Station remodeling PWP. And of course, there are the badges associated with hosting and visiting that Phineas gives out...
I can't think of any other things that you can only get by interacting with others but I'm sure others will chip in.
Anyway, I'll be happy to let you visit my town; I'm not able to play right now, but I should be on in a couple of hours. I can let you know when I'm available. Just say the word!
