Hey guys!
I've recently discovered this forum and it's awesome. A lot of new info for me to process about the game, mostly about PWP placement and custom designs.
Could you please enlighten me on how do you get custom designs, and how do you use them as paths? If I'm not mistaken, one character can only hold 8 (or 10?) patterns, so I can't see how it's possible to have elaborate pathing designs I've seen in some dream towns.

The path layout itself is important to me too, but I don't have a clue where to start or how to do it. If someone could explain this to me, I'd be eternally grateful.

Here's my town layout:

It might be not the best one out there, and I've placed my house right near the river when I first started, but I don't want to reset — this is the town I've started when I first bought my 3DS, and I don't want to lose progress.

So yeah, any help is appreciated! I do hope this isn't too much to ask. Thanks in advance :)

hi, welcome to the forums! c:
to get custom patterns you can pretty much just google 'acnl qr codes' and go from there, but a good site to start with is acnlpaths @ tumblr. there's a bunch of different categories for you to look through and see what you like and what may work for your town. some paths are skinny and only use one tile, while others are larger and can take up two or three tiles. but before you can even use QR codes, you'll have to unlock the sewing machine in the able sister's shop.
most people that do more the more elaborate paths in their town make a second (or third) character just to hold the patterns, that way your mayor's pattern storage can hold outfits or whatever else. and if you decide that QR paths are too much work, some people also make paths out of clovers, make use of grass deterioration to make dirt paths, or just use trees, bushes, and flowers to build a walkway through the town.

as for how to design your paths, that's kind of up to you. i always start at the train station and work my way around, but if you really want to plan things out you can doodle a rough idea onto your map and see how it works out. good luck! :-)

So for custom path designs that take more than one design, yeah, it is almost impossible to have just one character with path designs and any other fun designs you want for anything else. Which is why most people have extra characters in the game, both to hold extra items in their dressers and to have extra 10 patterns. So, essentially, the more characters you have, the more pattern capabilities you have. A total of 4 human characters will yield you 40 patterns.

In the Able Sisters' shop, you unlock the ability to scan QR pattern codes that other people have created and be able to incorporate them into your town once you have talked to Sable, who is working at the sewing machine. You have to talk to her each day for several days in a row. Then the QR code machine will be unlocked.

Feel free to message me if you need any other help! I'd be happy to help you ^-^ Excellent town map by the way!

Happy Crossing!

Hey guys, thank you so much for your responses!

I've already found the tumblr Crash mentioned, it's really is a treasury of QR codes! I'm on my way to getting the QR machine at Able Sisters (didn't know this was even a thing when I played before). I also found this handy tool for turning images into patterns, and it works wonders!
Having several playable characters in the same town sure explains how people are able to make these amazing designs for their towns. And the extra storage place is nice, I nearly ran out of it on my Mayor! I'll go create one right away.

I'd love to visit your towns to see if I can get inspired by your builds, or if you could visit my town and give me some feedback (although there's not much to talk about at the moment).

Thank you for the compliment, Leen! Is this layout really good though? I've seen some amazing layouts with town tree right in the middle of the map, looked so neat! I'm also a bit concerned about my current PWPs placement, namely the Cafe. The lighthouse feels solid where it is now (on a cliff on a northeast, up from the house).

Thanks again for being so helpful! :)

Crash and Leen already gave great advice. If you're looking for inspiration on how to landscape, check out dreamingofacnl@tumblr. I made this tumblr a few weeks ago where people can search for types of dream towns by category and submit their towns. :3

Good luck!

If you have the dream suite built, it can be helpful in terms of getting ideas and getting feedback on your town. Sometimes people also share their custom designs in their dream towns, and you can snag them for your own, and I believe you can use them before the qr machine is unlocked.

There's also an FAQ/Q&A thread at the top of this forum with lots of helpful tips and tricks, as well as people willing to help answer any questions you have.
