I got it as a birthday gift and it really it's sometimes useful, but it's much easier to use the wiki and to just google things instead ://
the greatest part is the item and clothing catalog though

This is exactly why I got it. As a guide, it doesn't hold a candle to the Japanese ones I have (official Nintendo/Shogakukan one and unofficial Perfect/Famitsu one), but it's cool to have some English reading material to flip through, when you want to casually 'experience' the game a bit without playing (it's not as stupid as it sounds!!).

It's not reliable as a guide though. Despite it having a lot of info, you'll find yourself double-checking everything on the internet just to make sure the book gave you the right info. That's how sketchy it is.

The other con is that it hardly has any visuals compared to the Japanese ones (sorry I keep comparing to the Japanese ones but once I had them, I couldn't ignore the huge differences in quality >_> ). The Prima guide doesn't even have pictures for the house exterior parts, VILLAGERS, or public works projects! Just compact text-based lists for those.

One redeeming feature is the fully illustrated catalogue of items, clothes, natural artefacts etc. which takes up 2/3 of the book and is very nice to browse through. As others have said, don't bother going there for info because there are too many landmines, but it's nice to have all of the items and pictures in one place, with an alphabetical contents list. Oh, it's also the only catalogue that spoiled the Astrology DLC items - no other guides at the time released that sort of info ;)

In short, the Prima guide is a cool little book to have - and I do love that it's a small compact book compared to the usual Western game guides - but only if your main purpose is to own it and flip through for entertainment.

P.S.
If you really want something just for the sake of having and looking through though, I fully recommend either of the two Japanese guides I got ;) That's if you have the means of/interest in getting them.

They are:

Nintendo Official Guidebook
which has an AWESOME catalogue layout.

Perfect Guidebook
which has the best Villager section
and generous large images.
Wow thank you for all of the information and links! This is very helpful! ^-^%

I don't have it or want it because I'm pretty sure most/all of the information is available for free online (though I could be wrong of course). I already have enough books cluttering up my apartment ><
