need help!

ok so i really need help. i have this project and i need to chose 2 less developed countries where i would plant corn to help their developement. and my corn is magical so i can genitically modify it in 5 ways to make it do whatever. i want it to grow in rice paddys (which are like flooded fields) but i know corn will drown so i need to know specifically why plants drown so i can modify it. why don't plants just keep taking in water and going through photosynthesis? what prevents aquatic plants from drowning?

wow thats harsh. actually i have basically an A and i have an alturnative route if i can figure this out. i wasn't planning on planting it in a paddy but i want to now
