I need advice on shading and highlighting..
I can only draw flat.. and when I do apply them, it looks like complete ****.
I draw on a tiny 3ds or with a mouse on the pc.

Also what do you guys think of this?
I drew it with my mouse on FireAlpaca which I just downloaded.. wanted to try it out.
Her shoulders/neckline look weird.. but besides that I think she turned out cute?
The lines look a bit wobbly but it's kinda hard drawing with a mouse. XD

This is super cute! A bit of shading in a darker pink under the hat could be neat-looking and highlighting the bangs could look nice! The mouth could be a bit smaller too. Nevertheless, I love this! c(ˆ▿ˆc) Keep practicing!

Thank you so much. I'll try to make her mouth smaller to see how that looks. Thanks for the advice. :D

heyyy i hope it was ok for me to draw on your pic...

since you're a mouse user, it might be easier for you to do cell shading instead.

i put some of the color swatches that i used. Its basically just not blending! Too also make it look more appealing, try changing the color of your lineart c:

also the eyebrows seem a bit big > <

AAAAAH this is so useful. Thank you so much for the help. ;~; I'm going to work on my drawing and make her eyebrows less big and try to shade and highlight.

1. I love it! It's amazing people can create such beautiful art with mouses X"D I have an art tablet and you draw better than me (IMO)
2. I suck at shading too, bruh. I just use this dodge/burn tool in gimp, it does right shading colors.
Keep your light source in mind, I like to shade it during the sketch process, actually! It's pretty helpful, here, look at my art {sketch}:

See the shading I kinda added? I'm a sucky teacher nvm
Cel Shading tutorial:
It's long D:
Clicky

Well since your using a mouse you might want to try out flash. Its mainly an animation program, but it auto-smooths your lines so I use it often for drawing as well :3

Thanks for the compliment.. also I can only draw heads.. and villagers with a mouse. If I had to draw a body I would freaking cry probably. xD Also thanks for posting that tutorial.

I gave the shading a try, also I drew my eyebrows smaller.. I tried drawing my mouth less big.. but it looked weird and out of place when I tried that.. I still have a long way to go.. but thanks to Riummi it looks a lot better than before.. or at least more alive. xD

I should watch that tutorial though.. because it only looks okay because of the example Riummi gave me. ;~;

Haha, same, bodies suck to draw! The artist in the video actually makes her art 10 x more appealing with just shading, It's really cool!

Yeah, I'm going to practise a lot. It gives my drawing a lot more life to it.
I hope I can afford myself a tablet in the future.. I think it would look a lot better then.

Yeah, with a tablet you can get really smooth lines and details/curves. I thought I'd be an amazing artist if I got a tablet but I guess not because look at me now :,)

Do you have a gallery online? I think that tiny sketch looked pretty cool. :D Also 2 years ago I couldn't even draw stick figures.. but I just drew more and started to learn myself things.. though I'm at that moment where I have to go watch tutorials online. :') Nothing wrong with that though

Aww, thanks :'-D No, I don't have a gallery [yet -cough-] And there's nothing wrong with using tutorials to get better! (If you want to see bad art, go to my art thread Seagull's View, that was before I went on hiatus and now I'm back {Probably why I don't have gallery, too -yet- -cough-}
