multiple villagers of the same species

The only species I have multiples of right now are octopuses, I have Marina and Octavian! I definitely don't mind having the two of them. But in previous games I've had multiple dogs or bunnies and tbh, I loved them so much anyway I didn't mind! I tend to worry a bit more about personality overlap, tbqh

I originally wanted 10 different species for variety but looking at my current line up I seemed to have accidentally have a lot of doubles of the same species in the opposite gender!! for example:
  • Huck & Diva
  • Judy & Chester
  • Tom & Ankha
Pretty funny how that happened unintentionally!

I had Cherry and Goldie, both were my starters. (Staring Uchi + Starting Normal)

At first I found them together extremely adorable and I considered both of them permanent residents. ... but then about 3 months in I just... got kind of exhausted at having two dogs. I like having a diverse set of animals, be it colors or species.

I have nothing against dog villagers and find them cute but it just felt like too much. Funny enough now that I'm back to just one dog, I like Goldie even more and spend more time with her. I had been kind of neglecting to talk to her for a while.

I guess my lesson for you is... you don't have to keep them forever. You could try having all those mice and just let one or two go if you feel like it's gotten stale.

i mean if u really like the villager even if u already have the same species i don’t think it’s a bother at all, but personally i wooould try to have max 2 of the same

I barely notice it, to be honest. In New Leaf, I imposed a rule on myself that I couldn't have more than one villager from any species. Looking back, I feel like that rule is overly artificial. Maybe having five cats or something is starting to push it, but I have two wolves on my island right now (Chief, Whitney), and I'm not bothered by it at all.

Like most other people in this thread, I think the story is a bit different for personalities, especially since things like DIYs are based on personality type. On the other hand, there's nothing about a villager that is intrinsically tied to their species. For me, I don't see myself going past two for a species, but that's a loose guideline I've set for myself more than anything else.

I had 6 wolves and 4 deer for awhile as those are my 2 favorite species in the game by a long shot. Lately I have gotten bored with the wolf pack of usual suspects gathering in front of resident services so I’m replacing a couple of them with other species (looking at Muffy and Ruby). I agree with others though in that personality diversity is definitely more important in this series.

My town currently has 4 squirrels and I have no problem with the diversity that I have. I also have 3 lazies, so personality diversity is also out the window. I feel like diversity doesn't matter as long as you love your villagers.

Something about having three mice makes me happy. Nursery-rhyme maybe? Anyway - those villagers ARE super cute, so don't feel weird about them. Also the fun thing about animal crossing is when maybe you think you're ready for a change in villagers - you can do it. Try the three mice! Tbh I am inviting Chevre and Nan onto my island and they're both normal goats - which is wild - but they seem like they were connected before they came to Flipside, so I want them both ... maybe you can find a story for your mice like that too?

I had been adhering to a two by two kinda thing at the moment. I have two sheep, 2 cats, 2 deer - one on the way. All I do feel this is a little restrictive for me as genuinely I want at least one more cat. But that would be breaking my unwritten rule.... darn Punchy for being so cute!

I'm trying to build a more diverse island and the two villagers I'm looking to get rid of a both the same type as villagers I'm trying to keep. Unless you're going with a full theme, sometimes it feels like having two squirrels and two cats are two too many! I'm hesitant to have more than two of any one type in the future!

I have two dogs, two anteaters and three cats. I picked out my villagers based on their looks and apparently I just happen to love the designs of these three species in particular (they're also my favorite RL animals, so...). Doesn't bother me, in fact species usually doesn't even cross my mind - when I run into them, I'm thinking something along the lines of "There's Olaf", "Olivia is being adorable again" or "What's Lucky up to", so I see them more as individuals than what kind of animal they are. To me, despite the repeated species, my villagers are still diverse.

If I wasn't careful I would have an island full of wolfs. As it is though I am fine though when I finally have all my villagers for 3 of them to be wolfs, 7 others is enough of a variety imo

Yeah this is basically my situation aswell, wolves are just so good though ;-;

I currently have 4 wolves in total on my island, being Dobie, Audie, Fang, and Whitney. I like to ship villagers into couples as I have did with these ones, so if I got rid of one I'd have to get rid of another too. I don't really have a problem with having multiple villagers of the same species though, since it's not required for me to get any expressions like the personality types, and I think most villagers are unique enough even in their specific species pool to justify not basing your villagers on species. Honestly, if there was a bigger diversity of wolves and the majority of them weren't just cranky and snooty, I would have had my entire island filled with them at one point or another in my playthrough. Although I think that would be perfectly fine, as again I don't judge based on just species alone and don't really care too much about the diversity of them on my island.

So I have 2 ostriches, 2 squirrels, & 2 ducks. Both squirrels are easily hoard villagers (not letting them leave) & I would let all but one of the birds go. I think it really depends on whether you like the design of a villager or not. And worse case, experiment, rinse & repeat. The species comes second, or at least that would be my two cents.

I ended up with three ostriches by coincidence, but I think they're one of the more diverse species! They all feel like totally different birds (I mean, one's a flamingo, one's a stork(?) and the other is... a robot.)

I have 2 squirrels, 2 tigers, and 3 cats. My perfect island is mostly cats. I like having a male/female pair of species. And I think all the animals are cute in their own way!

We have two rhinos and two wolves with different personalities, no problem at all. Would love to see them interacting:sneaky:

I have 4 cats and still loving it. I love cats, if you love the mice, go for it. They're different personalities and designs, so I dont get bored. The rest of my island is one of each species though.

I have two deer (Diana and Fauna) and not even two but three bear cubs (Judy, Stitches, and June). What it comes down to is that I like those particular villagers and want them on my island. Multiples of the same species doesn't get boring but too many of the same personality does. Usually two per personality is my limit, but I made an exception for Raymond 👀
