So one of my villagers said that Stinky was planning on moving out (thank god), and when I went to go talk to him about it, he pinged. After telling me that he was planning on moving out I picked the option that encourages him to move out and he responded by telling me that he basically doesn't trust me to train without him in my town (jock personality) and said there's no way he's moving out now. Is this a joke from that personality type or can villagers actually refuse to move out after you encourage them to?

Villagers can and will refuse to move out after saying they will.
If you haven't saved yet, if you restart your game, he should ping again.
Usually people do that to move or unwanted villagers. If you have saved, then you are pretty much crap out of luck :(

It happens sometimes. Villagers can change their mind if you tell them to move. Best thing to do if they change their mind is to exit out the game without saving. They will keep their original date them.

Oh wow ok. Welp I saved without refreshing this page so I guess he's staying for a while haha. Thank you!

Was going to say the exact same thing. Their response is random, so it will most likely change.

Sometimes even after they agree to move, they can change their minds in subsequent conversations in the days before they get in boxes. Talking about trolling :D

Villagers can change their minds before they plan to move. Just remember in the future to not save after you've talked to a villager that's moving out and hasn't given you the response you want.

Yup.. also after they agree to move, if you really want them gone, do not talk to them again until they are in boxes. especially when they ping you. ignore it and run away from them... lol cuz if they ping, they are trying to say they changed their mind and they'll stay.. speaking from my experience .__.

I had the exact same thing happen to me with Rasher. He was my 10th move in. (He was brought in from someone's Void.) He creeped me out, because I had NO IDEA where he came from. (At the time I had no idea what on Earth voided villagers were, and how they could come to your town.) So, finally, I got him to ping me to where he wanted to move. Our conversation was as follows:
Rasher: I am leaving on the 22nd of this month.
Me: Okay. Nice knowing you.
Rasher: .....?! Did I just see you hold back a smile. I can't be hallucinating! You're not doing cartwheels on the inside to celebrate the fact I'm leaving, are you? That settles it! I'm not moving! I'm gonna have you take real good care of me! Best friends forever!

I too was like you and didn't know you could leave without saving and them ping you again. (So I was stuck with him until I reset. You will find I do that a lot. XD)

This happened to me too many times so I know how you feel. Hopefully it'll only take a bit before he pings to leave again for you. Also when they do change their mind and you save, you have to wait until they ping again another day, so no unfortunately it's not a joke but I wish it was.

I've had this happen with Rooney when I needed him to leave to be replaced with Walt that same day. Thank goodness I quit and restarted to make him ping again and not change his mind. He's a cranky so although the dialogue might be slightly different, all personalities can change their mind and stay.

Diva (uchi) was a similar way too. She changed her mind the first time I was making her move, but since I only had her for less than a week she didn't give me much choice to make her leave, even when I quit without saving multiple times. The second time around I just completely stopped talking to her after she pinged to leave so no contact whatsoever from that point on.

TTing him out right after he pings to leave might be the best way to avoid accidental contact with him. So if you get someone to adopt him that day or void him, it'll be easier to deal with in case you forget and happen to talk to him anyways. Otherwise though just soft reset each time to avoid unnecessary staying again.

If someone says they're going to move out, I make sure not to talk to them again. If they ping you: run!! LOL
