My first campsite villager wasn't one I wanted to keep, so I decided to do the "ignore them forever after introducing yourself" sort of thing that used to get villagers out - but weeks have passed and lo, he's still here. Tonight I read an article saying villagers do not move out independently anymore, though - and I've seen him with the thought bubbles at least twice now? No big deal if I've been mistaken, but I want to confirm whether I should actually ask what's up next time he's "thinking"... 💦

tl;dr I'm coming from years of ACNL, so I'm lost on whether this move-out trick is still effective.

Hi! I'm also someone coming from years of ACNL experience so I completely know how you feel. I also tried the "ignoring them forever" technique LOL.
If you're asking about the thought bubbles, sometimes it's them asking to move out, but sometimes it's them wanting to sell you something or do them a favor. I believe interactions don't count anymore towards them being more or less inclined to move out; based on experience I've had my favorite villagers asking to move out more than the villagers I rarely interact with. So it's completely random who wants to move out. Also, yes, they don't move out independently anymore-- they always have to let you know before pushing through with leaving! I think that's the plus side if you're a heavy time traveller (I definitely struggled with keeping up with my villagers in ACNL because I TT'ed too much!)
You should definitely ask what's up next time he's thinking, he might ask if he can move out!

Yeah villagers don’t move out by themselves anymore in New Horizons, they have to ask you first before they can.

They can also only ask to move when outside and a thought bubble is over their head. So make sure to talk to them if it’s a villager you want to leave with the bubble.

i know how you feel, took me forever to get rid of my first villager, then i learned the trick. when one of your villagers wants to move, before you answer for them to stay or leave close the game and ignore them for the rest of the day whenever they have the cloud. then the next day another one will have it. keep doing this till the right villager wants to leave.

There's 15 day cooldown from the last day someone elft where no one will ask to leave there's a 5 day cool down where no one will ask to leave after telling someone to stay.

No one will ask to move on an event day or KK concergs
The last villager to move in will never ask to leave

Thank you everyone! I'll pay close attention to this guy's thoughts now...

I'll probably be giving this a try...!

/sad hi-5 it doesn't help I just got through with an absolutely laborious attempt to move a villager out in New Leaf - that took an actual month or two!
