Mother 3 Rare items

I'm currently playing through Mother 3, and I'm trying to get all the ultimate weapons for the characters. I was just wondering if Boney's Sniff revealed whether or not the enemy was carrying an item.

To my knowledge, it doesn't. But I'm a little rusty on the game. I'm pretty sure if it's an ultimate weapon/armor/item, it's left purely to chance.

which ones are you looking for?
I don't think sniff helps, in fact all the rare items in this game are purely probability I believe. It's like 3-5% chance of getting it depending on which ones you want. You have to fight the right enemies though.
