I got the royal crown and the regular crown, and I prefer the small crown. How do I get the throne?
I lucked out and got mine from Chops.

My character wears it, along with 3D glasses, a wetsuit and those Samus shoes. Ew.
It's worth buying it, at least to catalogue. Earning Bells is pretty easy in New Leaf.

the throne is a spotlight item - so can be found in the main street store if its upgraded enough to stock the occasional spotlight. (you get told on the bulletin board if the store has one for the day).
You can get it from Wishy the star (falling star/meteorite display), can shake it out of a tree & if you are good friends with villagers you might get one that way.
I got one from a HHA plaza house (you have to pay 800k + 20%, but it is at least orderable)
The items I think of as the most expensive are those I can't get like some of the unorderable DLC.
