You can also sell all your perfect fruit in another town when someone has it on premium, or you can buy turnips to Joan and sell them when the prices are high.

I reset my town to January 1st so right now I'm enjoying catching snowflakes for the ice set, and selling it. I get 8,888 bells per item so it's fun for me to do until I unlock the island.

if you want to make a lot it's good to buy turnips. then you don't have to do it very often to make a lot of money at least.

Pretty much this. Grinding for cash in AC is tedious no matter how you slice it. Just have something in the background to distract you from the monotony.

Not sure if it works on New Leaf but on City Folk me and my brother put a million or so in the ABD and then TT'd to the furthest date possible and received interest on it. We then TT'd as far back as possible then as far forward.
Of course, you have the risk of ruining your town and I'm not entirely sure if it works on NL.

My favourite way to make bells is to sell things on TBT to be honest A really quick and easy way is obviously to trade your TBT for IGB, not particularly "fun" I guess, but very effective. That or selling spare stuff from your inventory, or exchanging perfect fruits with others.

In game, I quite like bug catching and fishing... obviously you can also update your dream address for 5000 per day. Non native trees and bamboo are also good for generating a bit of cash.
