Ok so I just picked up the game, and I'm currently farming the Barroth so I can make a better weapon. But I'm still a huge noob at this game. Any advice anyone can give me?

I'm using sword and shield, I love how maneuverable it is, and it has good attack speed and strength, and as far as Armor set, I'm using Heavier Armor for more defense.
I'm not really all that familiar with SnS, so I don't know how much I can help in that regard, haha. Which one in particular are you using at the moment? The one thing I know about SnS is that it's good at dishing out elemental damage - take note that the Barroth is weak to Water when covered in mud, Fire when not, and Ice either way.
Are you using a full armour set? The key thing to know about armours in Monster Hunter is that the skills, more often than not, matter more than anything else. Each armour piece contributes a + or - value to a set of skills. When your total number for one skill reaches a certain threshold, usually +10 or -10, that's only when the skill activates. Full sets of armour usually give you enough points for a set of skills. If you want more defense, you'll want to upgrade the armour pieces (using Armor Stones) than crafting a new set.
The Jaggi set is a pretty good starting one, particularly because of Attack Up (S).

To be fair, most monsters feel like that when you first fight them, especially if you're just mindlessly attacking them rather than looking out for tells and learning attack patterns so that you can improve your inevitable next battle against them.

^ THIS. Unless you0ve played every monster hunter up to date. then it's not that bad lol. Anyways, if you become a gunner, try getting the god's archipealago as soon as you hit G rank. Helps a lot on multiplayer :3
