Monkeys in Wild World?

So, according to every animal crossing wiki (which yes, I know cannot always be trusted) many monkey villagers were introduced in Wild World, including Simon, Nana, Elise and Tammi. However, I played Wild World for five years and I never had a monkey villager in my town. I don't recall monkey villagers ever existing in that game. Is the internet crazy, or am I?
