Medalist Badges

I've noticed from a friend that the medalist badges as said on some online guides are incorrect (I think?), and have even experienced this myself. My friend was aiming on getting the gold medalist badge, which you need 5000 medals for. However, when he got to around 2000 medals, Phineas gave him the badge. I remember him telling me this because he was so puzzled. Later in time I was aiming on getting the sliver medalist, which you need 1500 medals. However, Phineas came up to me and gave me the sliver badge when I only had about 300 - 500... what.

So my question is as I am now aiming for the gold medalist badge. How many correct medals does it take to get the gold medalist badge, and how many medals did you have when you got it? This really does make me wonder whats going on....

It's 5000 earned over time, you don't need to have them all at once.

(I earned the gold badge a while back and I don't think I've ever had over 300 at once)

It's the total amount of medals that you have ever earned even if you spent them, not just the amount you currently have.

Unless your friend has only ever earned 2000 medals and never spent any, in which case, ignore me. I don't know what's going on. Then there might be some incorrect info floating around.

I believe this is inaccurate. I've only gotten the bronze, and I've earned enough medals to get me the whole mermaid series + Various other items. (Over 500 medals.)
