Max amount of "dropped" items for 5 star rating?

My house in the game is a bit out of the way, especially since... I didn't realise the incline limit was 8 and now I can't get to it easily, so I built an outdoor workshop.
WELL.... turns out this thing has been the reason I haven't had a 5 star rating because as soon as I pulled my materials off the tables, I got 5 stars.

So I was wondering, is there a max limit to how much items you can have "dropped" at a time?


Really wish they let us access our storage through the storage items, rather than changing clothes because for a game that pushes crafting, they sure do make it inconvenient. ):

I think I read somewhere the maximum was 15? Not entirely sure though. It does suck though, I've seen so many cool market places set up on people's islands that I want to recreate but I wanna get that 5 star rating first

I think it's somewhere around the 15 range too. It makes it super difficult to facilitate large trades or catalog sessions, buying turnips and just dropping things for general convenience. It's nice and clean though I guess

It is 15, but it is not a hard limit to getting a 5 star. I have over 100 weeds on my island and still have a 5 star. If you can compensate for the penalty, you can keep them there.

Yeah, I wanted to make a DIY market but I knew those counted against you--which kind of sucks because you can't even store them.
Didn't think materials would count against the 5-star rating, too...

I'm not really sure what else I could do to compensate. I don't even have any weeds, just these ~20 or so items out.

I have tons of weeds all over town for the aesthetic, but it turns out that what bothers Isabelle is the presents I have set out for visitors. All I had to do was pick those to immediately have 5 stars and get the golden can. But I don't care about the rating at all so I usually just leave them out unless I want to spawn Jacob's ladders.
