I've been going to the island a lot recently as well as playing the game without any hats and with a short sleeved top which I believe has been building up my tan level.

However, I do not want to reach the final tan level - the one I have now is perfectly fine and I'd be a little bit happier with the tan level just below mine.

I believe these are the tans:

Will holding a red umbrella remove my tan gradually or keep it the same? Should I hold my umbrella for my tan level to go down and then stay in the sun the next day and then hold my umbrella the next day and so on? Until summer ends and my tan fades of course.

How about on the island, what can I do to prevent tan? I don't think I can take my umbrella there.

Thanks for any help! Does anyone else have a tan?

I love getting tan in the Summer on Animal Crossing! It is one of the main reasons I wait for summer all year.
But I have to agree with you, the last level of tan looks just TOO ugly...!
If you don't wanna end up looking like an overcooked steak, you might want to consider having an umbrella (or a parasol, in this case) with you at all times.
Also, it has been tested that wearing large hats (like a Straw hat, for example) can prevent from getting more tan. Time-travelling for long periods of time might help your cause, too, since the game will believe that you didn't get out of your house at all!
So the concept is just like a real-life tan: you get the skin color tone that you like the most, and then you start covering yourself up not to get too burnt!

The way I see it, there is only one exception: in late August I will begin to get as tan as I get, so that I can keep a dark skin tone for a longer time, even during Fall (:
