Luck and rare bugs on the island?

I was playing on a North American island. When I joined, it was only me and this one other guy. What he did was clear everything (all bushes/trees/flowers) from the grassy part of the island. Then, he dug a single hole beneath each palm tree.

When I asked what he was doing, he said that this brought luck and rare bugs. I know luck was programmed into AC (katrina's fortunes), but I figured this had to be a scam. Regardless, I wandered around for a couple of minutes, caught six bugs, and left.

When I got back to the mainland and sold those bugs at Re-Tail, they sold for 48,000 bells. They were indeed rare.

Is there any possibility this actually works, or is it just by chance I caught those at that time? There is also a possibility that rarer bugs appear on palms rather than fruit trees, and removing the fruit trees increased the number of bugs on palms.

I do this trick as well and planted some extra palm trees for good measure. What it does is get rid of the uncommon and rare bugs that spawn from normal trees, flowers and bushes from the spawn list, so that you'll find only the bugs which spawn on the ground and on the palm trees which it does technically gives you a better chance to catch those rare palm tree bugs since they'll be only two uncommon bugs left on the spawn list.

What it doesn't change is the chance that they spawn at (luck stat).

So whats the point of digging holes by every tree? What does that do?

Not luck, just limiting the modifiers that spawn bugs. The holes in front of the tree could be a marker that you don't over-swing. I never needed one though. Anyways, 3x trees are all that you req. One at the center, & a Palm flanking it on the right & left side of the island. Removing the bushes will minimize butterfly spawns. Good luck!

Yeah, the holes were most likely so he didn't over-swing.
