Well like I said, I asked Merry to move in from the campsite but she's not here yet? So if I ask Diana, she will still show up because Lopez will be gone, yes?

No it doesn't work like that. Merry is officially counted as one of your villagers. You will not have 9 until that villager moves out of your village. I could ask a cycler if they can hold Diana for you? That person will come to my village and get Diana and then will proceed to time travel and get her to move out and then you can go and get her.
