Like because is popular or...

because i like them.
but i mean they are so popular for a reason. most of them do look typically cuter then most of the others.

I think the design of popular villagers are more unique and 'cute' in the game. i.e. Merengue's design is based off cake, Ankha's design is based off Egyptian figures, etc.

Actually, for some reason, I kept getting popular villagers in my town before I knew that they were popular (I got the game for my 12th birthday, so I didn't really get into the ACNL community until later). I ended up especially loving Marshal, Skye, Kid Cat, Stitches, Bob, and Colton. They all seemed to have so much personality and I loved talking to them and doing their chores (heck, while they were all in my town at the same time, I got the silver Samaritan badge with under 100 hours of play time). I don't have Marshal, Skye, Kid Cat, or Colton anymore (Marshal and Kid Cat got voided--all my friends/sisters had full towns or had Marshal already ;n; ), and I miss them so much--I cannot stand not having them there anymore. I've fully cycled out Kid Cat and Marshal intentionally, even letting Rosie and Fauna go. I reallyreallyreally want those two back, and fast.
Actually, I was going to get Marshal back, but I then realized that Colton had set up a plot in my town and left my town full. I hated him for that at first, but I then realized the error of my ways and ended up loving him. He moved a week later. ;-; He's currently in my friend's town, and she's completely obsessed with him.
I do feel the same way about many other villagers, like Big Top, Mira, Benjamin, Caroline, Wendy, Lucha, and Pietro (though I think he's pretty popular, actually). My favorite villager happens to be Butch, but no one else I know seems to have him, which is really sad. He's freaking awesome.
I feel like most gravitate towards villagers with cuter/cooler designs and the like, which is perfectly fine with me as long as the "ugly" ones are not hated on. Most people possibly are so enamored with the so-called top ten because they're the most well-known for being cute. This may not be the case, though--it's just a guess.

Actually, scratch the Marshal part--I got Marshal again today! ;v; I'm so happy!

I think most of the popular villagers are popular for a reason - their designs appeal to a lot of people. Personally I think Marshal and Fauna are cute, but I don't want them enough to pay out a lot of money. But if people think they're worth it, then they should do whatever makes them happy.

I must admit, I had Beau move in to my town from my campsite because I recognised him as a popular villager. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Ended up letting him move out, since he didn't click with me. But I let Diana move in for the same reason, and really liked her. I'd like Stitches one day because he's cute... tbh I wouldn't mind if he dropped down in popularity because it'd be cheaper to adopt him! ;) lol.

I don't have any tier 1s in my town right now, though I have a few tier 2s who I love. I like them just as I like my lower tier villagers. Hamphrey is one of my absolute favourites, and he's T4 currently. I don't think having no T1s makes my town any better or worse than anybody else's. To me, the villager popularity only matters when it comes to buying/selling/trading. I have Ankha in my town because she has a unique design, Ruby was a starting villager who reminds me of my best friend, and Bob is just wonderful (and may be my AC soulmate).

I think it's a little sad if people only want a town full of tier 1s just because they're popular. I mean, it's their game, they can do what they want... but there are so many other cute, interesting villagers to chose from. There's always going to be villagers that are more popular than others though.

I think that the tier system was made because of everyone's individual opinions on the villagers, if that makes sense. In order for those villagers to be placed at the top they had to have been popular before the chart was created. There may be some people who only want villagers because of their status on the tier chart, but I believe that they aren't the majority. If you really look at some of the popular villagers, it's easy to determine why they are so popular. It's usually because they're unique in some way, like how Julian is the only unicorn, how Lucky is the only mummy dog, how Ankha is the only Egyptian cat. People like things that stand out. Other popular villagers are popular because they fit in with a certain theme, like how Marina fits a pastel pink theme many people use or how Fauna fits a forest theme. I chose to have Tangy, Lucky, and Marshal in my main town because they remind me of my past towns - I had Tangy and Lucky in my Wild World town (if an accident ever happens and one of them move, I'll replace one with Ruby, who I also had and loved), and I had Marshal in my first New Leaf town that I lost. I had no idea of his popularity and wasn't even a part of any online communities at the time. I was really shocked to hear how he's one of the most popular villagers in the game, lol.

High tier villagers are high tier because they are liked by the highest amount of people online.

I like villagers for several reasons, looks, experience, nostalgia.

it actually makes me harder to like them when they are in top tier... because more expensive, so overused, but some have come through still

I feel like I'm being slowly being indoctrinated to like these little ****ers

I used to hate Zucker, but when he showed up in my town one day, I was kinda excited cause I knew he was popular. I even thought about keeping him >.>

At least for me, with Lolly, and for the same reason, Scoot, was because they were quite well-recognized in the Vinesauce community. However, Lolly, herself, is too adorable, and with me being a cat person, and how I find her catchphrase, nay, her whole "Sweets" thing rather cute, I like her a whole lot. I tend to see a lot of Punchy, too, but I mainly like him because of how friendly he was towards me in City Folk. It was pure coincidence.

It really depends!
Lolly moved into my town and I got her because I knew she was popular. I was planning on giving her away to someone. I ended up getting really attached to her :3
When she pinged me, I asked her to stay.

To be fair, I really like cats.

I agree with this post though, i've sometimes thought this when i've seen people who have villagers who entirely in tier 1, and I sometimes wonder if they actually like these villagers or just want them because everybody else has them and finds them cute so they feel like they must have them.

Although i'd be a bit contradicted if I didn't say that I have Marshal and Julian in my town, but I don't like them because they're popular and they're what everyone else has, I like them because of their personality and design. Yes Marshal's quite plain but he's one of the only smug who's design I actually like. Don't get me wrong though, the majority of the smugs all have cool designs i'm just into more simple designs of villagers that are more natural looking. Although I have Julian, who's less natural looking then Marshal (he's a unicorn ffs) I don't like him because he's popular neither, I liked him from the moment his design was revealed via Japanese users who were taking screenshots of new leaf when it was released in Japan. From that moment I knew I wanted him in my town, before he was even considered popular. Not that i'd care about his popularity though, since I liked him from the moment I saw him so I didn't care whether he got popular or not.

when i first started all this dream villagers thing, all i cared was the popularity because it means some kind of status. idk but u get what i mean. now when i started my second town, i could hardly care about popularity anymore and just got for whatever villagers i like regardless of what tiers they're in.

I will always like my villagers, no matter what tier there in. I actually like that my favorite villager, Bones, is in the second lowest tier. It doesn't matter if Bones is the number one villager in tier one or if he is in tier six, because he will always be my favorite villager.

I think it's more like they're popular BECAUSE so many people like them, not that people like them because they're popular, although some people probably do. People usually only get popular villagers they don't like to sell or trade for dreamies.

I have Rosie, and the ONLY reason I kept her is because of her popularity. I would have easily let her go otherwise. So...

i have stitches, who is first or second tier, but i don't really care about what tier my villagers are on, i just like having a variety that keeps changing
