There's nothing wrong with liking popular villagers because you just truly like them. If you only want them in your town so you can brag and show off, that's lame.

I think they're popular because more people like certain villagers. I can completely understand that someone like Fauna is more appealing that Quillson (PLEASE MOVE OUT.). Personally though, my favorite villagers arent Tier 1 or Tier 2.

I absolutely love Nate. Hes tubby and has the worlds most ridiculous eyebrows. And Alfonso...so dumb! But they're permies in my town and will never be leaving xD

I mean, the first time i saw Marshal i don't like because of his eyes, but then, i saw him with more detail and i want that smug squirrel in my town, but i saw that his extremely popular and that doesn't make me want him more.

Let me reword this for my example.

I hate to have a popular villager. Because people will think I'm the same as everyone, taking popular villagers because I'm boring or whatever they may think. I still have Fang and I love him, but I really dislike that he's so popular. I like him because he's a cranky and his colours are cool. He looks really nice in the winter right now, a real snow fox. But I still feel like getting rid of him earlier than I would with someone less popular, because there is that feeling of being typical or something.
So in conclusion, I don't like villagers more because they are popular, but rather less. I know there are more people who think like that, though there are much more who do like them for their popularity OR begin to like them because they see them everywhere with cute pictures and edits and fanart... That also plays a huge role. Tumblr for example is full of cute pictures of popular villagers, which makes people want them - because they seem so cute.

I really like Fauna and some of them, but one of my dream villagers is Alice (and I have her ♡). I don't think she is so popular like Marina, Marshal, Rosie, Fauna etc.

This is why I dislike part of the ACNL fandom.

Honestly, although villagers are a nice thing to have, IMO they really shouldn't be portrayed as one of the main things to judge a town on. Maybe their house placements, unless you don't plot reset, or the house exterior. But not the actual villager, ESPECIALLY it's tier.
I know Tier 1 villagers are everywhere and people are getting sick of them. Deal with it. People like those villagers. At this point Tier 5's are being given more love than ever and are everywhere, too.
If you want popular villagers in your town, and you legitimately love them, get them in your town. If someone judges you as "typical" or "boring" or visits you via Dream Suite and immedietly leaves once seeing the "same" villagers, then ignore them. They're not worth judging your town. No smart person judges a town without properly looking around and exploring it. The villagers definetly aren't the most important part of a town and should never on any circumstances represent the entire town and what's in it.
In fact, whenever I visit a dream town, I usually don't even talk to the villagers unless it's a villager I really like, like Marshal of Diana. Those two are my top dreamies and Teir 1's and I'm not afraid of being "typical" because anyone who puts that label on me is stupid. If someone automatically dislikes my town for having the "same old" villagers, then too bad for them, because they're missing out on all the other things I've worked hard on to make my town nice.
Please, next time you want a Tier 1, don't listen to anyone who labels you as "typical" or "boring." Do what you want. It's your town, not theirs. If they dislike your town or you for that, well then they don't know how to judge a town or a person. Don't listen to them.
And the same goes for Tier 5. Although they are getting a lot of love nowadays, there are still idiots who judge a town badly because the villagers are low tier or ugly. That's dumb as well. Don't listen to them.


You know, Tier 1's are getting so much hate and Tier 5's are getting recognized as "underappreciated" and "unloved" all the time, and getting so much love, I'm suprised the tiers aren't flipped and Tier 1 hasn't become bottom of the barrel.

This topic comes up often and the only thing I have to say about it is: there is a reason why these villagers are popular. Usually a very good design that appeals many people is involved. That's all.
I don't know why it's such a big deal :/

But I think it's really sad to base your preferences in opinions of others? Either to like something solely because it's popular (that I really, really doubt it happens in this case), or disliking something solely because it's popular.

Most of the villagers I love happen to be low tier, but some of the popular ones are really cute. ( Like Fauna).

I think some people do choose them because they are popular, but I think most people just happen to like them. There was a thread a while back of someone getting embarrassed to have people visit and see her one unpopular villager. Lol. And when you see towns with 10 tier ones, then it's pretty obvious that they chose them because of their popularity. However, just because you have some popular dreamies, doesn't mean you like them just because they're popular.

Personally I go for the villagers I really like, for their looks, kindness, etc. Sometimes they happen to be pretty popular, other times they're just popular to me, I don't let statistics/ratings get in the way of who I want to be in my village. Quite frankly, a lot of the time I don't even get how certain villagers get to be so popular. I mean Marshall is really cute and all, but consistently #1? Not for me at least, and that's the point, no one should feel limited to only go for the villagers that are super popular. It really is just a matter of taste, nothing to put much thought into. Go for whoever you like!

I'm realizing that some villagers I like better because they aren't as popular... Like Timbra! she is one of my favorite villagers, and I'm amazed she isn't higher on the popularity. but for some reason that just makes me appreciate having her in my town every time even more!

I adopted Marshal yesterday, but not because of his popularity. I honestly looked through a list of Smug villagers, and none of them really appealed to me other than Marshal and Julian. There are a couple of reasons I went for Marshal over Julian:
- Julian looks like a girl.
- I've been thinking about adopting Marshal for a long while.

It is, however, due to the Tier System that I found out Marshal existed. I may not have wanted him if I never found out about him. So the Tier System did have an effect on the fact that I adopted Marshal, but it is not the reason I adopted him.

I love a load of Tier 4's and 5's. For example: Aurora, Nan, Bree, Tabby, Peewee. Why do I love these villagers? Not because of the Tier System, no, because of the memories I have of them. I met them all on my WW playthrough, when I was a lot younger and before I joined TBT.

I thing the Tier System has some sort of effect on everyone, which may be people wanting the villager for pure popularity or - like me - showing them the villager for the first time.

Of course i know that every villager had his fans and i know that they're just virtual animals, but i want to see and know if the people choose his villager based on his popularity or because they really like those villagers, but now i see that maybe is a 50% - 50%.

Maybe not all the popular villagers are popular for some persons, and maybe... Every villager can be popular by his own, tier 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.

In my town currently I have:
- Marshal
- Stitches
- Lucky
- Erik
- Agnes
- Biskit
- Antonio
- Queenie
- Chief
- Tabby

I got Marshal for free because his previous Mayor needed him out asap and no-one seemed to want him... I found this odd because I knew he was popular... I had space for him so I let him move in. He is my favourite villager now because he is so freaking cute... same with Stitches and Lucky. I had Ankha and she lived next door to Lucky (<3) but she moved out

All of my other villagers, I couldn't tell you what tier they are from, but I love them all! Some of my faves that have moved out are Frank, Cally, BonBon, Phil and Mott... I couldn't tell you the tiers for them either :/

As for other people's towns... none of my business, I honestly couldn't care less who has whom living in their towns *or* their reasons for having them... live and let live.

My dreamies and current villagers are listed in my signature. I tend to look at villagers' designs and personalities and pick that way rather than how popular they are. I've always loved Fang; I didn't even know he was crazy popular until I joined these forums. I'm really sad he left my town without a word. I'm trying to get him back, but man, it's gonna take a while, lol.

people choose their favorites for different reasons but in my
opinion, never ever should you base who you want off the tier chart. that's just ridiculous. the tiers were only created to show who was popular and who wasn't based on how many people are looking for them. your opinion is your opinion, and that's what you should use to make your choices. there are soooo many t4's/t5's that are adorable and that I've grown to absolutely love.

it kinda kills me to see new people on here saying that the tier list has given them an idea on how their town "should" look -- that's madness. if you have a town full of t1's, that doesn't make your town bad. if you have a town full of t5's, that doesn't make your town bad, either. as long as you love your villagers, that's all that matters.​

I have marina in my town because she was my absolute favorite villager in Animal Crossing Wild World.
I have a picture somewhere on my old laptop that I saved of her giving me "Her most prized possession: A traffic cone" So now that she's in my town I have a traffic cone next to her picture in my house

I have a few of the other popular villagers (Ankha, Chief, Diana) but I got them each for separate reasons as well!

I wanted Ankha because I love Egypt and her house has a pyramid in it and it just looks so cute. I got Chief for similar reasons as Marina. I've had Chief in every town I've had in every Animal Crossing Game. So he has a special place in my heart too.

I got Diana just a few days ago because I designed her house in the new Happy Home Designer game and she was SO CUTE and I love how she always says "No doy!" So I found someone selling her and she moved in the next day <3

Not gonna lie, some of the villagers in my secondary town are there because they're tier 1 - Fauna was in the campsite and I couldn't resist, and Ankah and Fang showed up in my cycling town when I was trying to get Goldie for my main town, and I didn't have the internet and couldn't bring myself to void them. I'll probably trade everyone but Fang away eventually, but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and maybe later get someone their dreamie.

Marshal is in my town because I love squirrel villagers! :3 and I love Francine, Chrissy, Genji, Lucky, Poppy etc..way before New Leaf.
