The letters from Mom (and occasionally Dad) have always been a special part of the game for me! It makes me think about the AC world outside of what we know from just our one little town. It's some really great material for theories! I recently got a letter noting that Mom had "visited my town, as if in a dream" . . . is that to imply that where ever I came from, there was a dream suite there too? Seriously, someone write a fanfic about that.

So, have you ever received any letters from outside your town that seemed theory-worthy, or even just made you experience some emotion for a life that you, apparently, used to live with Mom and Dad?

I would occasionally get the letters that said something along the lines of "I remember when you used to do that when you were little." It always made me wonder what life was like for the character before he/she moved to the town. c:

^ Same here. I've always wondered how the character's life was before moving, and what specifically made them want to move in the first place.

Yeah, it usually makes me wonder why they left their home, though. Residents always seem to be displayed as kind of... young. Without having humans of other age groups to compare them to, I think it's safe to say that I doubt they're over 20. They actually appear, to me, to seem like they're about 12? It makes me wonder why they moved out so soon.

there it is, i was a bit late XD

i really think the letters are really cute, because of how sentimental mom can get sometimes. especially when she sends clothing relating to the season, it's just... really cute. LOL it makes me think of my own mom with how she would tell me to bundle up when it's cold. so i guess i just like how relatable it is. but sometimes the letters do make me curious about what kind of child you were growing up, bc i think one of the letters talks about how you would cry or s/t? i don't know, but yeah. >_>

I've always wondered why the main character moved to a village with just animals. How did they find it? Sometimes, I think it may be a metaphor that implies that all these new experiences are so unfamiliar and new, that the people they interact with are seen as non-human. Their animal forms represent their personalities and that could be how the main character chooses to see them.

I tend to think of the villagers in a more literal sense. That said, they interacted with Rover quite normally, as if it was average. And when brought to town and declared as mayor, you're given the option to protest a bit, but overall, the situation is just accepted.

This is another one of the reasons I think that the mayor is young. Like, really young. Unless this is a universe where animals that can communicate with people are normal, the only justifiable explanation for why your mayor doesn't freak out is that they're a young child with an active imagination, that already believes animals can communicate with people, and not being surprised when it happens.

But that's just a theory. A GAME THEORY.

I love that theory. If the villager is really young, then I can imagine a very sad reason for them leaving home (oh the drama~). What if they're dead??? And it's like a sort of heaven or alternate universe?? D:

Or it could just be a universe where animals talking are a real thing. ^^" Which reminds me, when I had Animal Crossing for the Gamecube, I think I recall a letter that the mom sent me where she asks how I'm doing despite being surrounded by so many animals. Or maybe it was a false memory? :/

I think it's fun to build your own theories.

For my mayor, I'm thinking it to be Kiki's Delivery Service-esque. Thirteen is the age where all the girls and boys go out to find their place in the world, and she was no different. After traveling by train for a while, she hears about this little village plopped right in the middle of a forest, she decides to check it out. Although surprised to be suddenly the mayor of a town she never set foot on, she feels right at home. Her asthma is 90% better, too, having lived all her life in a big city, the fresh air sure helps with it.

Mom and Dad hear the great news that she finally settled somewhere and start sending letters. They always make plans to visit but are always busy, but Mom always makes time to send letters.

That's just what I made up, but I think it fits quite nicely with the theme of the game. The villagers sometimes talk about how they were scared to move away from home, but are glad they did, so I think it's the same for them. Like the world they live in happens to be full of different species, including humans, all living together, with the same traditions and stuff.

Wow, really? That's so unusual! It does sound like something from that game though.

That sounds so cute, and definitely plausible!

yup, that basically ^^

what if she didn't move out
kids don't move out at the age of 12.
what if the human character died as a child & animal crossing is actually purgatory
it makes sense about the letters from mom, she reminisces about when you were alive & writes that she misses you

soomeone else has a full purgatory theory i think

Yes conspiracy!
I always thought that the mom and dad died while you moved in and it's really Isabelle sending those letters to give hope that your mom and dad are always with you.

I love these theories! I wish they could have actual NPC's for our Moms and Dads but I feel like if the implemented that, they would feel stale and disconnected. The letters are much more personal in my opinion. They did a really good job on making it feel real.

Wait, this is a theory thread? Well,I'm out. It always goes dark, like theories of the player being tortured and abused,or maybe dead...

I am totally sure that your PC is dead. What am I supposed to think when my Mum sends me letters like these?

"To my sweet Lil, I remember your first winter as a toddler. You slipped on some ice and fell boom! You didn't cry, but I could tell you wanted to. Be careful out there!"
"In honour of your birthday, I've prepared a full-course meal. Yes, I know you're not actually here."
"Dear Sweet Lil, I was walking home tonight, and the cold wind was going straight through my coat. It must have been my imagination, but I thought I heard your voice. It spooked me a little - Mom."

She attached a tumbleweed to that last letter. I haven't received this one, but I've heard there is another letter in which she says her and your Dad got dressed and tried to go on a proper date but ended up spending the whole time talking about you.

I love the letters! It's special since I never get letters in real life.

And getting them from loving parents I don't really know at all (HOW DID THEY GET MY ADDRESS WE ALL HAVE STALKER PARENTS HELPPPPP XD ) and super fuzzy cute animals is just super entertaining.

My favorites are always Dad's letters. :) I mean I rarely get them from him but.
