Recently I have had a fascination with the aesthetic and overall style of the 60's and 70's. I thought it would be neat to have the year in my game be somewhere in that era to create a retro vibe in my town, but I'm worried time traveling back 50 years will affect my game poorly. Has anyone time traveled a substantial amount backwards and had anything happen?
I time travel frequently but never further than one day in advance and never backwards more than a month. When I did time travel a month backwards Isabelle did not remark that it had been a while, so that's why I thought there might be a way to go back years and years and not have it effect anything.

Dont quote me on it but I have heard that TTing backwards only counts one day, no matter how far you TT back.

As long as you stop and save right after denying someone's request to move, you should be able to go back as far as you want without losing anyone. Once you start up your game again, though, someone is going to be wanting to move right away, so make sure you find them!

You can only go as far back as 2012 and as far forward as 2050 in new leaf.

I've researching and it looks like you can't go back further than 2012 in game, so I'm wondering if the game time would even go back 50 years if I tried setting the 3ds clock back? I'm unsure, and the effects might be the same as going forward because all the game knows is time passed.

and it looks like the DS clock only goes back as far as 2000. That's a shame.

you could set your ds time ahead, set your acnl time back, then set your ds time back and see what happens?? i doubt it could push past 2012 though
