Which of these musicals do you prefer, in regards to either the Broadway shows, the soundtracks, or the film adaptations, like the 2004 one for Phantom and the 2012 one for Les Mis?

Les Miserables has been my favorite musical for a very long time.

Phantom of the Opera is fine. I think I would like it better if my sister didn't play it loudly over and over again in her room when I was a child.

Les mis definitely. I was at the 10th anniversary recording at the Albert Hall in London and it was amazing. I even made it onto the edit 🥰 Found the program recently and I still have the flags and balloons pressed inside.

I was disappointed in phantom if I’m honest.

This is almost an impossible question. I love them both so much!

I've read both books. Phantom is the quicker, easier read, so I've read it multiple times. I love the romance and mystery. Les Mis is a much more sweeping, epic tale of politics, revolution, and the lives caught in the middle. It certainly makes a grander statement than Phantom.

I've never seen either of the Broadway musicals, but I have attended local productions of Phantom and thoroughly enjoyed them. I've seen a few clips of Les Mis online and it also seems very good. The rendition I saw of Castle on a Cloud was particularly moving.

I've seen multiple movie adaptations of both. The original Lon Chaney version of Phantom is a classic. The 2004 version was visually stunning and I adore the soundtrack, but I was disappointed in the movie itself. It lacked heart in my opinion. I couldn't form an emotional connection to the characters. I thought the 2012 version of Les Mis was, quite frankly, magnificent.

Regarding soundtracks, as I said, the 2004 Phantom is one of my favorites. Despite my opinion of the movie, I can play the soundtrack and hear all the emotion I felt was lacking. Perhaps the lack of visuals lets me focus more on the nuances in the songs and inject my own interpretation? My husband and I used the 2004 rendition of All I Ask of You in our wedding, so there's definitely a special place for it in my heart. While the songs in Les Mis are good and work within the context of the story, outside of I Dreamed a Dream and Castle on a Cloud, I would likely never listen to them on their own. Those two songs, though, are heart-rending.

Overall, I think Les Mis is probably better from a technical standpoint, but Phantom has my heart.

Oh this is a bit hard as I love them both.

I will say though Phantom of the Opera has my heart as I discovered it first when I was a child and LOVED it.

I have some of the songs on my playlist :)

I never seen Les Miserables; I have seen Phantom of the Opera three times I think. Once in Toronto (I think) and twice here in my state (or the other way around? My memory is really bad 😅). I loved the music; I was a kid most of the times I went to see them so I probably didn’t understand it very well. If I can get over my anxiety over leaving the house and other problems, I’d love to see it again 🙂.

You have peaked my interest! I forgot it was originally a book; I have a library nearby so maybe one day I’ll make a point of checking it out. As much as I try to avoid politics here and lately anywhere, I love anime, video games with stories that have some political themes (doesn’t have to be based on anything real;
with the exception of anything related to Zionism or if it was written or made by a Zionist
) and somewhat recently I’ve been interested in reading about some revolutions, particularly the Cuban Revolution. So this sounds like it might be something I’d like 👀.
