Landscaping Preferences/Inspiration!

With Dream Codes, it is now easier than ever to see other people's towns. Fortunately, this provides players with ample inspiration for their own towns. However, I still find it difficult to make up my mind or even visualize what I want my town to look like!

So, here I've created this thread where other ACNL players can leave tidbits of inspiration for others who seem to be creatively stumped, like myself!

What Belongs Here

• In terms of landscaping, I'm talking about tree/flower/bush placement as well as Public Work Projects placement (esp. the greenery placement around PWPs).
• Pictures are encouraged and appreciated! However, they are certainly not a requirement.
• Villager House Placement with respect to greenery, themes, town history/lore, PWPs

Examples of Posts

• "I like to arrange my flowers by color..."
• "In the southern part of my town, I have an apple orchard arranged around..."

In conclusion, I hope this thread will become a place of inspiration for everyone's towns! Above all, have fun explaining, exploring, and discussing New Leaf landscaping!

i really like my lighthouse area on the southern cliffs
i planted some hibiscus bushes near it because the seem to like the sea

also, in the west side of the river which is "MY PROPERTY" i have a fountain surrounded by jacob's ladders to the right of my house that looks really good when it gets dark i think

I don't know about you guys but I really like red and white roses together. I want to do different color combinations when I get more hybrids. It's also important for the bushes and flowers outside my house to coordinate with the exterior. (Design freak haha)

i like strait paths lined with bushes,i also divide my town in2 sections using trees and the pine trees fill the north part of my town

On the west side of my town, I created a bamboo forest. I have a zen garden in the middle with 3 zen clocks aligned. Whenever a new hour begins, all 3 clocks have a small person emerge to do a dance

Deeper in the forest, there's Kabuki, and I pretend he is a forest spirit xD

He seriously scares me whenever I find him in that forest though It's pretty rare, but he looks like a demon hiding in the woods

I personally like it when different colors of the same flower are bunched together.

I'm currently doing this thing where I seperate my town by color. I have an orange/yellow/white area and I use various different types of each flower for each space, but of the same color. I think it looks nice.

I like to put my trees one up from a path that goes east west and like to have bushes going north south. I always scatter the same flowers around an area if I can and usually match them to the colours of buildings in the area (or personality of the animal that lives nearby). I try to theme area's to what I tend to see the animals doing in those areas, or to the animals themselves, Benches and play equipment for lazy animals. Picknick area's for the girls and so on. I try to give each animal its own mini orchard of fruit (sometimes I try to match this to their house too) I usually put them somewhere to screen them from other things nearby, Ie on the left of their house if they are right near another neighbour or maybe behind them if I have a public works nearby to seperate them from each other). I like to have main paths in town that run north/south and east/west and then I do thin paths that come off those to the other area's in the town. I want as little amount of paths as possible to leave more room to do stuff in. I want my top corner (near the cliffs) to be more forested if possible and have less as they get closer to the beach and I also put my camp near the beach so they can enjoy the sea views of Foxfalls with lots of bamboo around it to help give a sense of camping out in nature by the beach.

This is a great thread! Honestly, my town looks awful at the moment so it'd be great to get some inspiration (pictures anyone wink wink). Haha, but in all seriousness, it just looks bad while I'm moving everything around, seeing what works and such. I've never really used paths or tiled in the games before so I've redone mine like 8 times now. T_T I've also never been a huge flower person, but I like some of the new varieties, so after I get my dreamies (means I'll get to stop TTing), I'll enact the beautiful ordinance and get working on town appearance.

I think some of my friends who come over often get angry at me for the shape of my town atm ;A; So I wanna make it super pretty to prove I'm not actually a slob--it was just a WIP!

I like filling my town with hybrids. I am trying to get rid f all of the normal flowers in my town. I like to arrange my hybrids in a checkerboard pattern by color. I have a few kind of older pictures here: http://freshfromnewarbor.blogspot.com/p/pictures.html

well i am doing this other plaza where there is a fountain, caf?, police staion ,lights and video screen with a lot of golden flowers.
then i am placing my lighthouse on the right side of the slope and the windmill on the left side.and i have two fruit orchard sourounded by bushes and a money tree surounded by golden flowers wich is sorounded by yellow hibisc. and my event plaza is sourounded by bambo and i am planing to do a garden with golden flowers and all the illuminated pwp surrouded by bushes.

This just makes me think of the War of the Roses.


I'm currently rearranging my fruit trees/planning out a path. I'm planning to put perfect peach trees around my house (so they're easy to harvest / replace) and regular fruit trees around my campsite (because my native fruit should be visible by the campers!). That's my plan so far.

I'm glad people are liking this thread!

I just finished planting my perfect apple mini-orchard in the Northeast corner of my town. I've had that planned for quite some time. In the Southeast corner, I plan to have a little Japanese-themed garden of sorts. I finally got the Wooden Bridge; so that's leading to the garden area. Now I'm just waiting on bamboo - although, I haven't really thought about bamboo placement yet. Currently, in this area, I have a small hybrid rose garden. Come on blue roses!

I have SO many, TOO many, flowers! I also like to organize my flowers in bunches by species. However, I've found that I really quite dislike the yellow roses. x~x I'm not sure why! I think if I had more colors to balance all the yellow out, they would be less annoying. But my hybrids are taking their time to spawn.

All in all, my town still feels quite messy and disorganized. I think having bushes will make the place look cleaner -- if I ever decided how to arrange them!

I had mentioned in my last post that I had finished planting my perfect apple orchard. Well, two of my planting spots turned out to be dead areas.ヽ(?д?)ﾉ



Any advice on what to do?

I think a single tree in between the dead spots looks silly. I did discover that a bench will fit in that area. BUT, it's not centered...so it kind of bugs me. If anyone has any other PWP ideas or something else for that area, I'd much appreciate it!

I have two different 'parks' in my town- areas with benches and fountains and streetlights etc with paving around them, bordered with flowers ^_^ I would put some pictures but I can't get it to upload :/
And I have a long path looping right round my village that leads to all the major buildings & parks... and lots of flowers! Hehe

Great ideas everyone! I also like the red and white roses and have them lining most of my paths. I'm still figuring out which flowers look nice with pwps. So far, I like pink tulips around the windmill (the color looks nice and they are both from holland). And I like orange cosmos around the lighthouse.

Like many other people have said, I arrange my flowers according o species and color!

Some things I have done with my town:

I have see quite a few QR code websites where people have patterns around their Tree in the plaza, and I attempted at doing that and love the results! <3

In the south-east part of my town, there's a peninsula where my little Japanese garden is. (In the process of being made - a villager I love moved right in the middle of it. T-T)

I also have a tree lined entrance to my town, and the rest of my town I have yet to organize. Much work left to be done. ;__;

I think paths can make for interesting gardens- my large bamboo garden in the south of my town is very reliant on different tiles to create visual interest: and it's safe to say that without tiles, my garden would be less green, since the lower part of my town is almost nothing but mud (thanks, grasswear!)

Oh my goodness! Your bamboo garden is gorgeous! It blows mine out of the water. ;_;
