Ladders?

I've noticed that if a villager's house is on a higher level and there's no ramp, they largely get stuck up there. (Is it just me?)

Do ladders (the ones you craft) work like ramps in letting villagers move freely or do they still get stuck if that's their only way down?

To my knowledge, they don’t use ladders. They’ll get stuck up there until you enter a building and walk out. That will allow the game to refresh and each villager will “teleport” to a different area.

I'm confused. When I last had a villager get stuck due to not having a ramp, he didn't teleport anywhere else in town. He was only either in his house or outside but on that tier, like he couldn't go anywhere else. Did that change in one if the updates, maybe?

If they can teleport to anywhere on the island, I can live with that

They might stay around the general area, but they may teleport themselves down when you enter and exit a building. I’ve played the game with no updates though due to lack of WiFi, so this is only what I’ve heard.

I've tried a similar experiment of blockading a villager's house so they can't leave. But they always find a way.

Croconaw and Belle T are right, they can show up in town even if they can't use ladders or escape a fenced-in area. I had Avery on the third tier of a previous island of mine with no incline for a while and still saw him at the plaza, in the museum and shopping at Able Sisters. c: (They can probably access Nook's Cranny as well but mine wasn't upgraded.)

Villager positions are random. When they pick a spot, they will stay there until the town reloads. Such as visiting a friend, mystery island, or reloading the game.

This is really good. Otherwise they'd only stay in their tiny little areas and you'd usually not see them hanging around the town square (which I love them doing).
