i logged on to my town today and saw that i had katie.. ive never gotten her before, but i didnt go to another town/open my gates for anyone so how is it possible that i got her? can it just be random?

Hi there: Katie can indeed randomly spawn, though I'm not sure if this happens because of a spotpass connection or what (i.e., not sure what the conditions are for her random spawnage). I've also wondered if she could potentially show up through streetpasses as well.

She randomly spawns when you've connected to the internet in your town.
I don't think you -have- to open your gates or go to another town, so maybe if you've downloaded any recent DLC or anything else?

Yeah the same thing happened to me a little while ago. She suddenly turned up and it freaked me out a bit. It's pretty random but it does have something to do with when you connect to the internet, not necessarily opening gates. I'm pretty sure you just have to visit another town and she'll leave yours.
