Does anyone know what the New Orleans-sounding jazz subgenre is called? You know, the kind of franctic, heavily improvised stuff... I really love the sound, but I can't find any recordings because I don't know what it's called. :\

No, sorry. :(

Trying looking online for just New Orleans jazz, and try to figure it out. It's probably a large umbrella though, so it could be impractical.

Nope, that didn't work... it just gave me a bunch of 30s era big band jazz... which technically IS New Orleans jazz, but it's not what I'm looking for.

It's called New Orleans Jazz. I know when you search it, nothing shows. Stuff happens. Would you like me to make you a list of my personal favorite New Orleans Jazz artists? I'd be happy to help.

Yes, please, I'd really appreciate it.

Also, to give you guys an idea of what I'm looking for, it kinda sounds like this:

Kermit Ruffins (My favorite!)
Irvin Mayfeild
Terrence Blanchard
Tim Laughlin

Thanks! Any particular songs that you recommend? Any that sound kind of like the sample I posted, perhaps?

Kermit:

Drop Me off in New Orleans
Mardi Gras Day
Palm Court Strut

Irvin:

Melena (a lot like what you posted)
Rojo's Revenge

Terrence:

Hope this helps!

Is it Creole jazz?
Nope... that's more in line with Dixieland-style jazz. I'm looking for something much darker, more improvisatory... I dunno how to explain it. It's sometimes associated with film-noir...

Also, linalemonlime, though the stuff you posted was good, it's still not exactly what I'm looking for... : (

Mm, I'm practically going crazy at this point... I'm SURE I knew this back in the day, but now I'm drawing a blank.

By the way, Katon, "God and the Devil In the Land of the Sun" from Stone Flower sounds very similar to what I'm looking for.
