PSA: You gotta turn on the backups from the setting menu when you start the game up. Tom Nook talks through the whole process. Nintendo will periodically update your island save on the cloud and tell you the last backup on the home screen for the game

Dream Suite is manually updated by you, but it’s not your island backup. The island backup is automatic when you are not playing the game but still connected to the internet. Tom Nook says they update it sporadically while your player is on sleep but still connected. But you have to set it up in the Settings menu (minus sign on the home screen for the game)Wait... It updates automatically but randomly when you are not playing but your console is connected to the internet. I just put my Switch to sleep last night without X-ing out of AC and it was updated as you can see. You have to set it up first via the settings on the title menu (hit minus)— Tom Nook will walk you through the process

Odd it updated when i was not in the game.
Nook just said it would upload when you are not playing but connected to the internet. I wasn’t sure if it would backup while x-ed out too so I didn’t, but it may either way

Just letting you know so you can tell others.
At some point in his spiel Nook says something about how you can use this if you damage or lose your console, so even in this dialog tree Nintendo is acknowledging that moving from one console to the other will at some point be possible

You do have to have a Nintendo Online membership. There’s no way to force updated save that I saw, and since I only set this up yesterday, I don’t know how regular Nintendo plans to update the save. I’ll bump this thread the next time my backup updates on the title screen so we can start collecting data points, though!
