I always had a headcannon that all the NPC's had houses in the large space above Main St.

But there's just nothing there.

I concur. I always had a problem with the fact that Isabelle never gets time off to sleep. If she's not working in town hall she is running an event. She only sleeps once in the entire game and then she's all upset with herself for doing so. Most of the NPCs get time off. All of the shop owners get time, heck Cyrus even sleeps during the day for a while. Blathers and Celeste sleep standing up (which is normal for birds) so I believe only Brewster, Isabelle, and Digby are up 24/7. Well, maybe Luna but I'm not sure she's ever fully awake anyway.

There is something just not right about that. Even the post office has shifts so one of them can go home and get some sleep.

If she had her own house she'd at least get to go rest.

I felt bad that Izzy doesn't have her own house so I used one of my path characters to build her one in my main town.

Ooh, yes I think it would be cool if they lived maybe in a separate section off of main street, like when you visit hha houses. It would be fun to invite them to your house or send them letters like you can for the other villagers. I would totally write to Phyllis.

Yeah, Isabelle and Digby both need a house. They work 24/7 with no breaks D: Isabelle's not even sitting at the desk. She and Digby just stand there without complaining. They could qualify as royal guards

I would love if Isabel got a house and more of a story. If she could get a story like Mable did it would be really cool, I feel like that was really missing from New Leaf.

I really wish this for most of the characters, I wish they could all have houses that they would go to after work is over. Even Isabella and Blathers should have time off to go to their houses.

It would be cute getting to see how their houses are I bet Blathers would have lots of antiques and bookshelves, and a warm fireplace with a nice comfy chair by it. (I am not sure if Celeste would live with him or not...)

And I think Isabelle would have a bunch of the Green Series and a really comfy big bed to sleep in like a puppy and flowers all around, and the special little seashell would be on her mantle or in its own little display case. I feel like she would also have a little craft section. (Maybe Digby would live with her too)

The Able sisters would all live together in a comfy little house with a nature theme and each of their rooms would reflect their personalities, I think you can easily guess whose room would be completely Gingham...

The Nooks would live in a large luxurious house with all the fanciest stuff of course and the Nookling's would have a bunk bed and I am pretty sure they would always fight over the top bunk.

Leif would live in a tiny cottage surrounded by flowers and his house would have tons of potted plants all over maybe even a little birdbath. He would also have the flower series of course.

Shrunk would have the sloppy series maybe and colorful furniture too, his wife and kid would live with him too, but since I only know of them through the jokes he tells I can't say how their stuff would look. (He could also maybe have an aquatic house because he is a axolotl...)

I don't really know about Harriet or Kicks though, I don't know enough about them. maybe Harriet would live in a super cute pink everything house (like my mayor's house...)
