So Ken pinged me to move out a little while ago. I left the game, did some things and then came back on. I went to go talk to Merengue, and she has Ken's catchphrase now...even though she never asked me for a new one! Is this normal, or just a weird glitch thing? As soon as she asks me to change it, I will because I do not want Merengue going around saying "no doubt." XD

it is normal lol mine seem to spread the nicknames/catchphrases around within a few days.
I had Pate saying Ay Carumba (don't ask) lol within 3 days 5 more were saying it as well.

It's normal but kind of weird too haha - I made Mira's catchphrase "I'm SailorV!" and it kind of spread to Del too now -.-'

I got the opposite happening to me actually. Once someone start referring me as "Bucko", everybody else start chasing after me so they could ask me permission to call me Bucko (was doing some landscaping at the time). You'd think that one of those pings would at least be a PWP request... But no~ OTL

Villagers will ask to use nicknames, but they'll copy catchphrases from other villagers on their own. I think it's actually kinda cute, since it sort of shows the friendship between villagers "behind the scenes"!

I changed Freya's catchphrase to "gruff(music note)" when I had her, but I decided to let her move away. One or two of my other villagers had been using it, and it started spreading from them after she moved. I thought of it sort of as their way to remember her, which was really sort of sweet. c:

Yeah, if you ever see two villagers walking away from each other singing, it is very likely one now has the other's catchphrase. I have never been fortunate enough to catch one of those conversations. I gave someone in Mirage Kabuki's catchphrase ("Meooo-OH!") even though Kabuki never lived here, and now it's spread to many villagers.
