I got a blast from the past with the transparent 2DS (I wish the transparent 3DS was real!), and I was wondering if anyone found the 2DS to be worth the money over a 3DS? I already have a 3DS XL (1st version), and I wanted another console to trade with myself.

I have never used the 3D function on my 3DS, and that's my main reason for considering the 2DS over the new 3DS XL.

Does the 2DS lack anything major that the 3DS has? :O

ok you're gonna get a lot of 2DS haters with a bias to the superior 3DS in here, so keep that in mind when reading what other people post.

But honestly, I think it's worth it. If you just want another system to use to be able to trade, streetpass (does 2DS even do streetpass idk LOL), etc, then it's worth it. The only time I see the 2DS better than the 3DS is if the user is a casual gamer who only really plans on playing a few 3DS games, 'cause that way you can still enjoy the games, but not fork out a lot of $$$ on a system, and get a cheaper alternative. If you're more of a hardcore gamer, and plan on playing a **** tonne of games on the system, then you're probably better off getting a 3DS. But since you said you only want it for trading, and already have an XL, then that's really not an issue.

As long as you don't use it as your main system (which you obvi wont do since you have an XL), it's a pretty good alternative to have since it's pretty cheap. If you are planning on dropping your 3DS and using the 2DS as your main system then that's a pretty bad idea (but I don't think you're going to do that form the looks of things anyway). The 2DS doesn't fold so it has bad portability.

Yhe main thing to keep in mind though is it really worth spending ~$100+/- on a system solely for the purpose to trade (and a few other things that come with having two 3DS's)? Maybe you should also consider spending a little extra money and upgrade to a new 3DS and use that as your main system, and use your old 3DS as your "second" copy to do trades.

Decision is totally up to you, but the 2DS is defs worth it, regardless of what all the incoming haters are gonna say

I agree, maybe wait it out and upgrade to the *new* 3DS? I mean depending on if you want to utilise it's new features.

But if you're not interested in the new games that NEEEEEEED the features the *new* 3DS has, then save so,e cash and just get the 2DS!

I never saw a point for the 2DS (for myself) until I saw the transparent one. Ugggggh I want it so bad! Even tho I hate everything about the 2DS design wise haha.

Haha, I used to be a 2DS hater. When it came out I thought "why have Nintendo released a piece of sliced bread??" ;P

Yea I'm torn between a new 3DS XL and a 2DS. x_x

If I got a 2DS, I would still be stuck with the old 3DS and upgrading would cost even more money. :(

But I'm not a hardcore gamer (heck I've only played Pokemon, ACNL and Fantasy Life in the 3+ years I'd had my 3DS). The other thing I want two consoles for is shiny hunting/ hatching, where I can just stick a piece of card under the circle pad of one and do something (far) more challenging/ fun on the other one.

Portability wouldn't be an issue, because I already have a 3DS so that's not a problem.

Weh, I'm still on the fence. DX

Okay so I know this is a little off topic, but the new 3DS XL has the power button RIGHT where you rest your finger... And you can accidentally press the power button all the dang time! It happened to my friend and she lost like 3 hrs of Pokemon gameplay, then kept saving and still managed to lose another few hours.

So. Maybe check them out in store and play with them a bit. It might help with your decision. :)

yea i kinda just brought up the hardcore/portability issue for the sake of it, i know it wont be an issue for you since you've got an XL :)

if you're really just going to use it for shiny hunting and trading, then i'd go with a 2DS. since you said so yourself, that you're not a hardcore gamer, I doubt you're going to play games exclusive to the new 3ds - so I think your best bet is getting a 2DS imo. And if they do release a game exclusively for the new 3ds, just do what i'm doing and wait for the enxt gen console and play it on that, because that'll probably have new 3DS game compatibility, as well as be a next gen console.

no offense to your friend or anything but i really dont see how you can accidentally turn the power off unless youre really stupid... like you have to use a pretty decent amount of force to actually press the button.. how is that possible unless youre that incompetent i just dont get it - if it's that much of an issue why not just put tape/tack over it to stop you accidentally pressing it whilst you play.

Because the weight of the DS itself leaning on your finger is enough pressure to press the button.

Your hands should be supporting it enough though so that it's weight shouldn't be an issue and it dispersed through your hands..... Unless you're literally freeballing the 3ds how is this possible LOL like soz I'm just gonna let the 3ds go in my hands and rest on my fingers at the bottom??? wtf lol

I'm sorry I honestly just don't get how it can happen..

Like I can hold my iPad and phone upside down with my finger resting on the lock button, And it never once has locked my phone (unless I've accidentally jerked my finger). I don't see how the 3ds is any different to this - I mean, maybe the power button isn't as stiff as the lock button, but even so, I've rested my finger on my current 3ds's power button multiple times and I've never accidentslly **** it off

I think you're going too far off topic. It was just something I wanted to mention quickly, not debate.

But, back to the point, it doesn't sound like any of the games you're interested in have new games that need the new features.
Except maybe animal crossings happy home designer haha! Although I think the amiibo cards are compatible with the old 3DS? I'm not sure.

You could also keep it on your mind for a while. Then see what happens. Or trade in/buy preowned in the future to upgrade.

I had the option of upgrading to the new 3DS or buy an old one and I would LOVE the (even) bigger screen and I think the new Fire Emblem game needs the new 3DS but I would much rather buy a new ACNL XL and buy a THIRD DS second hand if I eventually need it.

And I only came to that decision from waiting a few months and reading reviews, waiting for Nintendo to release information and working out what I really wanted right now.

So definitely take your time. :)

(Also friendly bump! I hope more people give their opinion!)

Simple solution: Get the Hori Duraflexi protector, or probably any of the protectors. I got the Hori one to protect my MH4U design and it shields the power button from this possibility.

Alternate solution: Don't rest the system on the table/yourself. ;P

On Topic: The 2DS is worth it as a secondary system, especially if you catch it on sale. I never used the 3d on my system until I got the N3DS with the stable 3D, but even then i tend to keep it off to conserve battery.

If you're referring to the 3DS XL and the N3DS XL, the screen sizes are actually exactly the same. The only difference is that the N3DS screen is IPS and the regular XL is TNT (though some people on reddit have pointed out some early N3DS units shipped with TNT screens).

I got a 2DS as a secondary system to trade Pokemon and for streetpass tags (my main is a regular 3DS) I now use the 2DS as my main system.

Since I nearly always carry a purse, portability is not really an issue. My only issue is, since it doesn't close, the screens can get scratched really easily if the system is not in a protective case.

Aside from that, it is very comfortable to hold, at least in comparison to DS Lite, DSi XL or the original 3DS.

2DS looks so cheap though
It looks as if someone desperately needed a Nintendo console and couldn't save a few more quid

I was gunna get one before I got my boyfriend one for Christmas, just for trades and stuff, but now since he rarely plays acnl i can use his all the time, so its almost like i have two

Thanks for all the opinions! Having thought it through, it's probably better to wait and get a new 3DS XL. I don't want to get a 2DS and have a game I want to play be incompatible with the 2DS. :(

As for the power button, thanks for mentioning! I know where the button is (where the indication lights on the current 3DS XL are), and I don't think it'll be a problem for me because of how I hold a DS.

For me, no. It's constantly open, so when you drop it...crack.If you are a mom/ dad/ have siblings, they could take it, drop it, and step on it.

I own a 2DS and have gotten used to the small screen size over time. It's not as portable because of its big and clunky size, but I still manage to fit in my pockets? Can you explain that lol? Anyways, it's great for the price and very sturdy, but pick up a 3DS instead if you can want to go scrounging around the bottom of your couches for that hidden treasury of quarters and whatnot.

I'd say wait for the New 3DS. I get the feeling most games will becomes New 3DS exclusive soon.

This is my main worry.

The 2DS is good because it's cheaper but I think it's better to just get the new 3DS to make sure you won't get ripped off later on.
