I dunno man, why do we need to differentiate, can't we just refer as person, individual, one etcetera? :'(

Eh, it doesn't really bother me, people will get offended if you refer to them collectively instead of individually, people will find offense in any small word or matter. I don't see how it's offensive anyway since it's not like it has any negative connotations to it. I don't really care I guess, I don't see what's wrong with it.

i'm white but i've heard a lot of people who arent white that use poc a lot and think it's better than saying non-whites etc...
i don't need to use that exact experssion though, if people of colour don't like the term "people of colour" and find it to be problematic i won't use it.

I've never heard the phrase "person of color" before. Where I live, we still call people black or white. However, is "person of color" any different than saying "colored?" Around here, we don't call black people "colored" because it sounds rude. I guess it just depends on where you're from.

At the risk of sounding ignorant (which I've been sometimes), I think the reason "people of color" is considered a more appropriate term than "colored" or "colored people" is that the word people is the first word in people of color which reinforces that they are people first and of non-white ethnicity second while colored or colored people has colored first which reinforces the idea that they are non-white first and people second. It might be a distinction without a difference which is why I can understand why some people might not like the term. In America, the term includes both African Americans and Hispanic Americans along with other races and ethnicities which is why people use it instead of just black.

As for the people who wonder if we even need the term, I'd say yes. In an ideal world, we'd all be colorblind and wouldn't have to talk about people's race, but obviously most western countries are not post-racial societies. While race is nothing more than a social construct, that social construct has massive effects on people's lives. That is why it is important to have a term to talk about the unique issues that non-white people face in western countries.

Whew know studying too much accounting when I think POC stands for percentage of completion.

I think POC is an ok term but I don't actually use it.

why do "people of color" have to all be grouped into one group/category like is it that hard to acknowledge someone's background? it's too general imo.
but i don't see it being used as often just online.

i don't really like how any non-white person is just grouped under the huge blanket term of poc. it's as if they have less value or individual importance than a white person.

People will complain about anything. You just gotta learn that sometimes you have to ignore them.

Of course it's appropriate, otherwise the far left wouldn't be forcing people all over to use it. It's a tool by radical liberals to restrict free speech to protect people's precious feelings. I'm a person of color and I've never seen POC used online. I would be more offended if people called me Japanese just because I'm Asian. Don't be afraid to tread people's toes once in a while and say whatever you want as long as you are telling the truth.

lol it's not inappropriate ... everything seems to be given 'terms' nowadays, I don't really find it necessary honestly

This is mainly just my opinion, but it sounds really outdated and the term "colour" when used for race seems weird to me. Plus everyone has colour on their skin unless they're an albino lol

POC stands for "Person of Color" or someone who is not caucasian. Do you think it's appropriate to use? I see it used a lot, but I've read about actual "POC" getting upset about its use.

What do you think?

Also, I have another question: What if someone has a white father but a poc mother? What does that make them?

First Question: I don't see why not. As long as you're not ONLY using POC to refer to them.

Second Question: Probs biracial.

why cant you just use black asian indian spanish or any other race that is more specific

it's as dumb and unnecessary as those new emojii hand sign skin colours

no one has yellow skin like that unless you have jaundice

I have never seen this term. I think it's pointless.

It's a very broad term that is used in extreme or very vague cases. Like the only time you would hear it is, like, if someone's talking about Donald Trump or something. Like "Donald Trump is racist towards all POC". Because listing all non-white races and their minority groups would be much more tedious. Or basically whenever discrimination is being talked about, and it is just used to make sure not to leave out minority groups. For example, if there's a town where many black people are harrassed because of their race, but a few Latinos and a few Asians are too, it would be easier to say POC, since it doesn't leave anyone out.

I think it works as a good umbrella term and as long as it's being used in an appropriate manner it's a fairly useful term. I have never seen anybody getting offended by it.
