Is it true that villagers have items they never sell or get rid off?

I heard that villagers have items that they never get rid off because they like them so much, or are a theme the villagers like very much.

I tried buying Bruce's basketball hoop, but he doesn't want to sell. And I want him too, badly!

The basketball hoop is not even from his favourite theme, so why the heck won't he sell? It's not made of gold!

Depends. They might not sell whwn you ask in their house, but can be one day suddenly they talk about replacing that item =x but so far I know Barold talk about how he cannot imagine his room without Papa Bear, so I am waiting to see if he really mean his words xD

I believe they sometimes lose their things so they end up in the police station for you to claim, that and they sometimes sell their possessions in Re-tail under their name. I'm not completely sure if they'll sell the rarer items like the sloppy series for Marshal, and I also don't know if your friendship level with these villagers affects what they sell
