Yes, you can get your surname legally changed. My Dad legally changed his to his mother's (my nanna's) surname because he didn't want to take his father's (my grandfather's). This was mainly because my Dad's father left the family when my Dad was about 18 months old.

My aunt did it as well.

I have my Dad's current surname (which is my nanna's). So yeah.
