Is it okay to use other's custom designs in your own island?

I've seen a lot of cool designs and I want to use them but is it okay to use other's designs. I know in nl it was encouraged but is it the same in nh?

If the creator of that design has chosen to make it downloadable by easily accessible means (e.g. QR codes), then I don't see why it wouldn't be okay to do so.
Seconded this.

They would never upload the design and show it off and then get angry with people using it. They post it to share. If they don't want it to be used, they won't post it.

If you're seeing someone's design, that means they've shared it. And if they've shared it, then I can't imagine they're NOT wanting people to use it! That... would be really weird 😅 If they've shared the code, they're obviously welcoming others to use it. And if they haven't shared the code, then you really can't use it, so it'd be a moot point.

I guess it might be different if, say, you stumbled across a custom design in their Able Sister's shop (I think you can get them from there?), they may be more possessive of those, but in that case it's quite easy to ask them if you can use it.

I think it’s ok but you have to give credit to designer if asked.
Yah, I think that'd be the one thing. I mean, I'd say it's obviously okay, but the exception would be if someone says "Hey, cool fossil pattern!" and you're like "Thank you! I spent hours carefully crafting it all by myself..."

Though, frankly, some designs are used SO often that most people here would likely recognize them. Like, "the path"

If they make it public and publish it online with their code I think you can safely assume they've intended it for use. If they didn't want that then they could have kept the design private and not added it to their creator code. I know I have a few I've kept private! I try to keep track of any designs that aren't my own, though, in case anyone asks for it!

i think thats a fair statement. especially when it comes floor deck designs. the complexity is very minimal and so many varieties its hard to say where it originated from.

Yah, not all are gonna be instantly recognizable to everybody, so if someone asks it would be courteous to give credit and not try to take credit. I mean, the police are unlikely to bust down your door for it, but it'd be just rude to try and say you made it.

So, to sum up:
-Using shared designs? Perfectly fine, and I'd go so far as to say encouraged since they shared them in the first place!
-Claiming credit for said designs? Not cool, don't do that.

All my designs are made by others. I'm just not creative enough to make my own paths so luckily there's lots of people offering their designs free of charge. I'm sure they want their designs to be used & get popular.

Most of the time, I feel better when I design my own patterns. I only use others patterns when I don’t have the time to go pixel by pixel. But that’s just a bit of a quirk I have cuz I have some artistic inclination. The game gives ya the choice to share designs with everyone to use; why not use them!

I totally think you should, they're being posted so that's the whole point c:

Its really only a problem if you share your town and such online and claim everything was done by you... otherwise though, its your game and everyone's sharing their designs, so you should have fun with it!

I’ve seen people post the codes and then say, “I made this for a commission so please don’t use it if you’re not the person who commissioned it.“ I guess it would be polite to follow that command, but on my own island if I like it I’ll probably grab it. 😂 I’ve never actually done it, though.

I don't really understand the thing about commissioning paths and making them "exclusive" for the person who commissioned them... if the creator really wanted that, they would have posted it without sharing the code. Also does it mean that the commissioner has the rights to it and that they can share it for public use if they want to? It's a tricky subject...
