Is it okay to update Ubuntu when I dualbototed it?

Right now Ubuntu has popped up with a Update Manager. I'm currently running 9.10 and it is asking me if I should update to a higher version.

Oh yeah, is there any good free virus programs besides Avast? I know there is AVG but I don't want to have only a 15 day trial.
